NHAI Launches ‘Arogya Van’ to Boost Biodiversity along Highways
In a groundbreaking initiative, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is set to enhance biodiversity and promote ecological sustainability through the creation of ‘Arogya Van.’ This thematic project involves establishing medicinal tree plantations on vacant land parcels along national highways. The effort aims to enrich the environment by introducing tree species that support pollinators, birds, and microfauna, thereby boosting ecosystem resilience.
A Comprehensive Action Plan
The first phase of the ‘Arogya Van’ initiative includes an action plan that targets 17 land parcels covering over 62.8 hectares. Nearly 67,462 medicinal trees are expected to be planted across various National Highway projects in the states of Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Delhi-NCR, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Karnataka, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, and Chhattisgarh.
Medicinal Trees Identified for Planting
As part of this initiative, around 36 tree species with recognized medicinal benefits have been identified for planting. Trees such as Neem, Amla, Imli, Jamun, Lemon, Gular, and Maulsari will be strategically placed according to their suitability for the respective agro-climatic zones. Priority will be given to areas near toll plazas, wayside amenities, interchanges, and cloverleaf junctions to maximize public awareness and community engagement.
Focus on Ecological Sustainability
Historically, NHAI has employed a mix of native and avenue tree species for plantation activities aimed at greening and stabilizing the ecology along highways. For this season, NHAI has earmarked approximately 188 hectares of vacant land for plantation efforts, scheduled for the upcoming monsoon months, promoting higher rates of survival and sustainability.
Promoting Traditional Medicine and Public Awareness
Furthermore, the ‘Arogya Van’ initiative is in line with the Government of India’s focus on promoting traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda and conserving indigenous medicinal plants. These plantations are envisioned as living repositories that serve to educate the public about traditional medicinal knowledge and its significance today.

With ‘Arogya Van,’ NHAI reaffirms its dedication to developing environmentally sustainable transportation infrastructure. By merging ecological restoration efforts with public outreach, this initiative aspires to create a network of green corridors that enhance roadside ecosystems while also function as informative hubs, showcasing India’s rich heritage of medicinal plants and sustainable living practices.
