Krishi Mahakumbh: A Hub for Farmers’ Prosperity in Madhya Pradesh

A transformative three-day event called ‘Krishi Mahakumbh’ is set to take place in Raisen, Madhya Pradesh, from April 11 to 13. This significant initiative aims to strengthen income generation for farmers by focusing not only on crops but also on dairy, poultry, fisheries, goat rearing, and opportunities for rural women. Union Minister for Agriculture, Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan, emphasized that this national event will unite various elements of the rural economy, covering every aspect from seeds to market exports.

Connecting Farmers to the Entire Value Chain

The Krishi Mahakumbh will provide a comprehensive look at the agricultural value chain. From production to marketing, attendees will explore the complete journey that farmers experience. The venue, Dussehra Ground in Raisen, will host live demonstrations, technical sessions, training series, and business networking opportunities, fostering direct interaction among scientists, start-ups, Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs), Self-Help Groups (SHGs), and rural entrepreneurs.

Showcasing Advanced Livestock Practices

During the festival, livestock exhibits from the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairy will feature superior cattle breeds such as Gir, Sahiwal, Tharparkar, and Malvi. Goat breeds like Jamunapari and Barbari will also be showcased, emphasizing their potential for both milk and meat production. Additionally, special poultry breeds like Kadaknath will demonstrate valuable market connections for farmers.

Mobile veterinary units, health camps, vaccination drives, and expert advice in breeding and nutrition management will enhance productivity for small livestock farmers. This initiative aims to educate them on effective livestock farming methods, integrating animal husbandry with sustainable agricultural practices.

Water-Based Enterprises and Fisheries Innovation

The Fisheries Department and the National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB) will present innovative aquaculture models, including biofloc systems and pearl farming. These modern fishing methods aim to show farmers and youth how to maximize profits, even in limited water and land conditions. The festival will also showcase government schemes that support water-based enterprises, helping farmers develop sustainable income streams year-round.

Empowering FPOs and Elevating Rural Products

More than 50 FPOs will participate in the marketing division, promoting value-added products like GI-tagged rice, millets, and organic food items. This national platform is designed to elevate local products’ visibility and pricing, enhancing market access for rural farmers.

An FPO conference on April 12 will delve into topics such as branding, packaging, and logistics, guiding small farmer organizations in their journey toward greater market reach through e-commerce and retail.

Highlighting Women’s Contributions in Agriculture

The Ministry of Rural Development will feature women’s enterprises led by ‘Krishi Sakhis’, ‘Aajeevika Didis’, and Self-Help Groups (SHGs) at the festival. Their stalls will showcase a variety of products that not only empower women but also contribute to a self-reliant rural economy.

Opportunities for Youth through Training and Innovation

Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan pointed out that a key focus of the Krishi Mahakumbh is to offer training for farmers, showcase agricultural start-ups, and facilitate direct engagement with scientists. The event aims to increase farm productivity while creating new employment opportunities and avenues for entrepreneurship among rural youth.
