Behind the Scenes: Mukesh Chhabra Reveals Initial Doubts on Casting Sara Arjun with Ranveer Singh

The recent casting of Sara Arjun alongside Ranveer Singh in the film Dhurandhar has ignited discussions, particularly due to the noticeable age difference between the two actors. Casting director Mukesh Chhabra shared insights into the decision-making process, revealing that both he and director Aditya Dhar had initial reservations about selecting Arjun for the role. However, they ultimately recognized her suitability for the character, emphasizing the importance of casting a fresh face to enhance the film’s authenticity.

Extensive Audition Process

Chhabra disclosed that the casting team undertook a rigorous audition process that spanned nearly a year. They aimed to find a completely new face for the role, conducting over 1,200 auditions in total. Chhabra stated, “We were very clear that if we are entering that world, the audience should feel surprised about who the girl is.” The goal was to ensure that the actress appeared authentic to the film’s setting and could fluently speak both Hindi and Urdu. The casting brief emphasized the need for innocence and simplicity in the actress’s demeanor, as Ranveer’s character is drawn to these qualities.

As the audition process progressed, the shortlist narrowed from hundreds of candidates to just a few. Chhabra noted that after evaluating the final ten, Sara Arjun stood out due to her performance in a key audition scene. “There were two or three others who were also close, but she matched it exactly,” he explained, highlighting her alignment with the character’s requirements.

Initial Concerns About Age

Despite her standout audition, Chhabra admitted that there were initial concerns regarding Arjun’s age. Both he and Aditya Dhar felt she might appear too young for the role, prompting them to conduct an additional look test. “Initially we felt she looked a little young. We thought let us do one more look test and change the makeup slightly so she does not appear too young,” Chhabra explained.

After adjusting the makeup and conducting the look test, the team gained confidence in their casting choice. Chhabra remarked, “It is a very tough job,” acknowledging the challenges involved in ensuring that the actress fit the character’s profile while also resonating with the audience.

Focus on Authenticity

The decision to cast a fresh face like Sara Arjun was rooted in the desire to create a genuine connection between the characters. Chhabra emphasized that casting someone with prior experience in the industry could detract from the authenticity of the film. He stated, “There should be no baggage. A new face works better.” This approach aligns with the film’s narrative, where the characters meet for the first time, necessitating a believable portrayal of their relationship.

The casting team’s commitment to finding an actress who could embody the character’s essence reflects a broader trend in the industry, where filmmakers are increasingly seeking fresh talent to bring new energy to their projects. As *Dhurandhar* prepares for its release, the anticipation surrounding Sara Arjun’s performance continues to grow, with audiences eager to see how she complements Ranveer Singh on screen.
