NSO Launches Groundbreaking Survey for India’s Services Sector
The National Statistics Office (NSO), under the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI), has announced the launch of the Annual Survey of Incorporated Services Sector Enterprises (ASISSE). This pioneering survey, set to commence in April 2026, will encompass businesses across all States and Union Territories in India. With a focus on transparency and accessibility, the NSO has also released a user-friendly guide titled Know Your Survey: A User Guide to the Annual Survey of Incorporated Services Sector Enterprises (ASISSE).
Significantly contributing over 50% to India’s GDP, the services sector is essential for the country’s economic landscape, generating millions of jobs and driving transformation over the past few decades. The ASISSE aims to develop a detailed database of this dynamic sector, which includes areas such as trade, transport, hospitality, IT, education, and health. With valid data being a cornerstone for informed policymaking, ASISSE will serve as a crucial source of official statistics related to the incorporated services sector.
Building a Comprehensive Database
The ASISSE represents an important step in establishing a comprehensive database for the incorporated services sector in India. While a similar database exists for registered manufacturing through the Annual Survey of Industries (ASI), the NSO acknowledges the necessity of capturing data within the services sector through this new initiative. In tandem with the Annual Survey of Unincorporated Sector Enterprises (ASUSE), these surveys will provide an extensive overview of the non-agricultural economy, presenting key indicators at both the state and industry levels.
The scope of the ASISSE includes all corporate entities registered under the Companies Act, 1956/2013 or the Limited Liability Partnership Act, 2008. With a sample size of approximately 121,000 enterprises, the survey is designed to yield essential operational and economic indicators that will assist in evidence-based economic analysis.
Enhancing User Engagement and Awareness
The ASISSE will adhere to the provisions outlined in the Collection of Statistics Act, 2008, as amended in 2017, alongside the Jan Vishwas (Amendment of Provisions) Act, 2023. Data collection will be carried out through a secure web-based platform to ensure the integrity and confidentiality of the information.
In conjunction with the survey launch, the NSO is promoting greater public engagement by distributing the Know Your Survey guide. This document not only outlines the survey’s objectives and methodologies but also addresses common questions and concerns from participating enterprises. By aligning the guide’s preparation with global best practices, the NSO aims to foster a more trustful relationship with the public regarding official statistics, thereby enhancing the quality and reliability of the data collected.
Overall, the ASISSE represents a remarkable initiative that underscores India’s commitment to better understanding and improving its services sector, ultimately paving the way for informed decision-making and economic growth.
