iPhone Fold Expected to Feature Innovative Hinge Design to Address Crease Problem: Report

Apple is poised to make a significant entry into the foldable smartphone market with a new model that has been in development for several years. Often referred to as the iPhone Fold or iPhone Ultra, this innovative device is anticipated to debut alongside the iPhone 18 Pro lineup later this year. Although Apple has yet to officially confirm these plans, recent reports from China suggest a major design focus on the hinge mechanism, which could enhance the device’s functionality and user experience.

Apple’s Focus on Hinge Design

Recent insights from tipster Fixed Focus Digital on Weibo indicate that Apple may utilize 3D printing technology to create the hinge mechanism for its upcoming foldable iPhone. This innovative approach aims to minimize the visibility of the crease that typically develops on foldable displays. The hinge is crucial in determining how the screen bends and how noticeable the crease becomes over time.

Apple has a history of integrating 3D printing into its products, having previously employed similar manufacturing techniques for components like the Apple Watch casings and the USB Type-C port in recent iPhone models. By applying this technology to the hinge, Apple could achieve greater control over the structure and precision of the device, potentially leading to a more seamless user experience.

Display Structure and Durability

Other smartphone manufacturers have also begun to explore similar strategies to enhance foldable devices. For example, Oppo has introduced a 3D printed polymer layer in its Find N6 foldable phone, which helps to mitigate the crease effect on the display by filling the gap beneath the folding area.

In addition to the hinge, Apple is reportedly focusing on the display structure itself. Sources suggest that the device may incorporate a dual-layer glass setup featuring Ultra-Thin Glass (UTG) and Ultra-Flexible Glass (UFG). This design would position the display between two layers of thin glass, potentially preventing direct contact between the screen and the hinge during folding. Such an arrangement could alleviate stress on the panel over time, enhancing the overall durability of the device.

Production Plans and Launch Timeline

Previous reports have emphasized Apple’s commitment to addressing common challenges associated with foldable phones, particularly regarding screen durability and crease visibility. The company has been actively testing various designs to improve the long-term performance of its foldable device.

Moreover, indications suggest that Apple is gearing up for large-scale production of the foldable iPhone. The company is expected to place orders for up to 20 million foldable display panels from Samsung Display, a figure that exceeds earlier estimates and reflects anticipated demand following the device’s launch.

While the foldable iPhone is currently projected for a release around late 2026, the final details will ultimately depend on an official announcement from Apple. As the tech giant prepares to unveil this innovative product, industry watchers are keenly awaiting further developments.
