Indian Railways Achieves Historic Milestones in FY 2025-26
In a remarkable year for Indian Railways, the organization reported substantial growth and development across various sectors during FY 2025–26. Key achievements include record performances in freight operations and passenger services, a focus on infrastructure improvements, enhanced safety measures, and the advancement of digital initiatives. These accomplishments highlight the crucial role of Indian Railways in fostering economic activity, improving connectivity, and ensuring efficient travel across the nation.
Robust Performance in Freight and Passenger Services
Union Minister for Railways, Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw, emphasized the transformative achievements of Indian Railways on social media. He announced that the railways operated around 25,000 trains daily, further augmented by special services during peak travel times, offering enhanced convenience and accessibility for passengers.
Freight transportation witnessed a historic peak, with a remarkable 1,670 million tonnes of cargo loaded throughout the year. This achievement showcases the capability of Indian Railways to effectively manage essential commodities like coal, cement, fertilizers, and food grains, thereby maintaining vital supply chains across sectors.
Advancements in Manufacturing and Passenger Experience
Emphasizing self-reliance, Indian Railways produced 1,674 locomotives as part of its ‘Make in India‘ initiative. Additionally, 6,677 modern LHB coaches were manufactured, significantly enhancing safety and comfort for travelers. The introduction of the new Vande Bharat Sleeper trains marks a significant leap forward in providing faster and more modern travel options, particularly for long-distance passengers.
Focus on Safety and Digital Transformation
Safety measures also saw substantial progress with the implementation of the indigenous Kavach Automatic Train Protection System, which has now been deployed over 3,100 route kilometers. The organization is set to expand this system across an additional 24,400 kilometers, aimed at preventing railway accidents and ensuring operational safety.
Digital initiatives took center stage with the launch of the RailOne App in July 2025, providing travelers with a single platform for ticket bookings, train inquiries, and the resolution of grievances. Furthermore, efforts to enhance transparency in ticketing were evident, with the removal of over 3.04 crore suspicious user accounts to ensure fair access to railway services.
Infrastructure and Connectivity Enhancements
Infrastructure development progressed rapidly with the establishment of 35 Gati Shakti Cargo Terminals, improving logistical efficiency and facilitating multimodal transport. Under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, 119 stations were redeveloped, providing upgraded amenities and an improved commuting experience for passengers.
Strategically important connectivity projects were also realized, such as the extension of the Bairabi–Sairang rail line to Aizawl, enhancing railway access to the Northeast. Major bridge construction projects have bolstered all-weather rail connections to Jammu and Kashmir, further showcasing the commitment of Indian Railways to support nationwide connectivity.
These remarkable milestones reflect the ongoing dedication of Indian Railways to expand capacity, modernize infrastructure, enhance safety, and promote inclusive development.
