Study Abroad Aspirations? Financial Strain from Falling Costs May Impact Budgets

The recent depreciation of the Indian rupee is significantly impacting the cost of overseas education, prompting many middle-class families to reconsider their plans. As tuition fees soar, students are either delaying their studies or opting for shorter courses. Some are even exploring local educational institutions as a more affordable alternative. Experts indicate that the financial burden on families is increasing, leading to a more competitive landscape for scholarships and financial aid.

Rising Costs of Overseas Education

The cost of popular overseas courses has surged by approximately Rs 3.5-4 lakh over the past year, straining the budgets of many families. Arnav Kumar, co-founder of the study abroad platform Leap, noted that this increase is forcing students to rethink their educational strategies. Many are considering deferring their plans by one or two years or seeking financial solutions such as loans and scholarships. Piyush Kumar, regional director for South Asia at IDP Education, emphasized that students are actively adjusting their approaches to manage the rising costs.

Foreign education loans are typically sourced from Indian banks, which sanction loans in Indian rupees based on current exchange rates. While loans from foreign banks are an option, they often require a local co-signer or collateral, making them less accessible for many families. Data indicates that the rupee has depreciated by 4.9% against the US dollar and around 2.5% against the euro this year. This depreciation, combined with global tuition inflation, has led to an overall increase in education costs of about 7%-11% annually in rupee terms.

Impact on Student Choices

The financial strain has led to a noticeable decline in the number of students pursuing higher education abroad compared to previous years. Study abroad consultant Meenal Damani reported that many students are now favoring European countries over the United States for their studies. This shift is largely due to concerns about job security in various markets, which has diminished the perceived return on investment (ROI) for studying abroad. In India, the options for specialized master’s programs remain limited, prompting students to seek opportunities in foreign institutions.

As families navigate these challenges, they are increasingly aligning remittances with tuition fee milestones. Akshay Chaturvedi, founder and CEO of Leverage Edu, highlighted that students are now prioritizing predictability in their loan structures over mere access to funds. This trend reflects a broader shift in focus from prestigious university brands to the overall ROI of the educational experience.

Future Trends in Overseas Education

The changing landscape of overseas education is prompting students to explore a wider range of destinations. Countries such as Germany, Italy, France, and Ireland are becoming increasingly attractive options for Indian students. This shift is indicative of a broader trend where students are seeking value for their investment in education rather than simply pursuing well-known institutions.

As the financial pressures mount, families are being forced to make difficult decisions regarding their children’s education. The trend of deferring studies or opting for shorter courses may continue as families seek to manage costs more effectively. The competition for scholarships is expected to intensify, as more students look for financial assistance to support their educational aspirations abroad.
