Smart Cities Mission Achieves Remarkable Success in Urban Development

The Smart Cities Mission, a pivotal initiative in urban transformation, has garnered praise for its alignment with national urban goals and fulfilling citizen needs. A report from NITI Aayog, released in September 2025, highlights that this mission significantly advances multiple United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Impressively, it has accomplished a project completion rate of 93% across 8,063 projects, with all Integrated Command and Control Centres (ICCCs) being completed, showcasing tangible enhancements in urban living conditions, safety, mobility, and the environment.

Comprehensive Assessment of ICCCs

The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) has undertaken a thorough self-assessment initiative via the ICCC Maturity Assessment Framework (IMAF 2.0). This structured tool aims to evaluate the maturity of ICCCs through ten specific pillars, such as infrastructure, cybersecurity, governance management, and innovation. Each of the 100 Smart Cities received tailored feedback on the assessment, designed to identify areas for improvement in their ICCC operations.

Central Government’s Role in Urban Pilots

A significant aspect of the Central Government’s involvement in the Smart Cities Mission has been to aid cities in developing distinctive pilot projects, intended as models for other urban areas. Detailed documentation of these projects is readily accessible to the public on the Ministry’s portal. Additionally, the Ministry has produced a comprehensive report titled ‘Making City Smart’ that consolidates learning experiences from all participating cities. This document has been shared with various state governments, encouraging them to utilize it as a reference for enhancing urban development initiatives in their respective regions.

Official Communication in Rajya Sabha

This informative update was provided by Shri Tokhan Sahu, the Minister of State for Housing & Urban Affairs, during a written reply in the Rajya Sabha. The Minister emphasized the ongoing efforts and achievements of the Smart Cities Mission, underlining its critical role in shaping a better urban future for India.
