India and Canada Strengthen Trade Ties at WTO MC14 Meeting
At the recent WTO MC14 meeting, Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, Shri Piyush Goyal, engaged in a significant bilateral discussion with Canada’s Minister of International Trade, Mr. Maninder Sidhu. The talks primarily aimed at fast-tracking the ongoing negotiations for the India-Canada Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), a move touted to bolster trade relations between the two nations.
The ministers not only focused on the FTA but also explored a diversified approach to sectoral engagement. They proposed enhancing cooperation in key industries such as shipbuilding, pharmaceuticals, tourism, and education. Mr. Sidhu extended a warm invitation to Shri Goyal for his scheduled visit to Canada in May 2026, where he is expected to lead a substantial Indian business delegation. In support of these efforts, India also welcomed Canada’s initiative to organize a business delegation to India, centering on high-tech sectors including aerospace, defense, and space technology.
As both ministers highlighted the significance of transitioning to clean energy, they agreed to delve into collaborative efforts in nuclear energy, alongside discussions about agriculture and critical minerals. This multi-faceted approach aims to create a stronger foundation for collaboration across various sectors.
WTO Reforms and Trade Issues
During the MC14 agenda discussions, Goyal and Sidhu exchanged viewpoints on crucial WTO reforms, focusing on several topics such as a moratorium on customs duties for electronic transmissions, the Investment Facilitation for Development Agreement, and the Multi-Party Interim Appeal Arbitration Arrangement (MPIA). In this context, India asserted the necessity for the WTO to maintain its consensus-based operations while safeguarding its foundational principles.
Furthermore, India underscored the importance of prioritizing previously unfinished mandates, especially in agriculture, before shifting attention to newer issues. Canada acknowledged these concerns, advocating for constructive engagement under the WTO framework, while recognizing the differences in perspective regarding specific trade matters.
Both countries appeared determined to enhance their diplomatic and economic collaboration, leveraging their synergy on multiple fronts. As the talks unfolded, the foundations were laid for a more interconnected future, promising vast opportunities for mutual growth and advancement.
