India Emerges as a Global Leader in Drone Technology
Under the visionary guidance of Prime Minister, India is rapidly paving the way to become a global hub for the drone industry. The government’s comprehensive initiatives aim to build a robust indigenous ecosystem that supports the rising demand for drone technology across various sectors, including defence, agriculture, disaster management, and logistics.
As drones gain traction in these key areas, the need for skilled professionals has intensified. In response, the Indian government has unveiled several training programs designed to equip individuals with the expertise needed for various drone-related roles. These initiatives span Remote Pilot Training Organizations (RPTOs), the Namo Drone Didi Scheme, Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana 4.0 (PMKVY 4.0), and the SwaYaan project focused on human resource development in Unmanned Aircraft Systems.
Expanding Remote Pilot Training
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has authorized 251 RPTOs across the country, successfully training 42,412 remote pilots. This includes 53 pilots from Mathura District alone. Upon receiving their Remote Pilot Certificate (RPC), these trained pilots can seek employment anywhere in India, opening up numerous career opportunities.
Namo Drone Didi Scheme Boosts Local Communities
The Namo Drone Didi Scheme is another innovative initiative, where drones are provided as part of a training package for Self Help Group (SHG) members. The 15-day training equips one member of each SHG with skills in drone operation, including practical applications for agriculture, as well as basic maintenance knowledge. To date, 500 SHG members have been trained and certified as skilled drone pilots.
Skill Development through PMKVY 4.0
As part of the Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana 4.0, which is spearheaded by the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, the focus is on providing industry-focused skill training. Since its inception, 25,791 candidates have received training in drone technology, with 4,731 of those in Uttar Pradesh alone.
SwaYaan Project Enhances Educational Framework
The SwaYaan project seeks to enhance human resource development in Unmanned Aircraft Systems. By leveraging a hub-and-spoke model involving 30 premier institutions, the initiative promotes research, training, and innovative solutions in drone technology. It encompasses areas such as drone electronics, aeromechanics, and the development of autonomous drone solutions in real-world applications.
National Mission on Drone Technology
The newly launched PUSHPAK initiative marks a significant step towards fostering excellence in drone technology by collaborating with esteemed institutions like IIT Bombay and others. This consortium aims to develop indigenous technologies essential for a fully operational autonomous drone ecosystem.
Future Skills in Drone Technology
The Directorate General of Training (DGT) has also introduced new courses under the Craftsmen Training Scheme. These programs target future skills, with 1,423 candidates enrolled in Drone Pilot (Junior) and Drone Technician trades.
Supporting Growth through PLI Schemes
The Ministry of Civil Aviation has launched a Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme for drones and drone components, which has led to the creation of 2,650 jobs since 2021. This initiative further solidifies India’s commitment to becoming a leader in the global drone industry.
As these initiatives unfold, India is not only setting the stage for a technological revolution but also ensuring that its workforce is prepared to meet the future demands of the drone economy.
