Summer Crop Sowing Data Revealed: A Mixed Bag for 2026
The latest agricultural report highlights significant insights into the summer crop sowing area for the year 2026. The data reveals trends in various crops, showcasing both increases and decreases compared to the previous year. With a total area sown of 42.68 lakh hectares this year, a decrease of 1.02 lakh hectares from 2025, stakeholders in the agricultural sector must pay attention to these changes.
Rice and Pulses Take the Spotlight
Rice remains a staple in the summer sowing season, with a recorded area of 27.86 lakh hectares in 2026. Although this marks an increase from last year’s sowing area of 28.65 lakh hectares, it only reflects a limited growth given the normal summer area of 31.49 lakh hectares. Pulses have also shown a positive trend, moving from 3.47 lakh hectares in 2025 to 4.09 lakh hectares this year, indicating improved production efforts.
Coarse Cereals and Oilseeds Insights
Interestingly, the category of Shree Anna cum Coarse Cereals has grown to occupy 6.04 lakh hectares in 2026. This is a notable shift, particularly in Jowar and Bajra, although the overall area for these crops still lags behind the normal summer area forecasts. On the other hand, oilseeds have seen a slight bump, reaching 4.69 lakh hectares this year; however, the sector’s response remains crucial as it hovers near previous years’ marks.
Key Crop Areas Under Review
The specific figures reveal that maize stands out with an area sown of 4.24 lakh hectares this year, marking a significant increase from its previous area of 5.00 lakh hectares. Expected areas for Groundnut and Sunflower continue to contribute positively to the total oilseeds output. Groundnut has been sown over 2.98 lakh hectares, while Sunflower has slightly increased to 0.32 lakh hectares.
Despite these increases in certain areas, the overall crop area sown has dipped. This decline signals a potential challenge for farmers and agricultural experts who are keen on maintaining optimal production levels. The data from the current year shows not only opportunities but also areas that require strategic attention going into the growing season.
