Rail Infrastructure Projects to Boost Connectivity in India
The Ministry of Railways has recently greenlit two significant rail infrastructure projects aimed at enhancing connectivity and operational efficiency in Gujarat and Bihar. With a total investment of ₹647.58 crore, these initiatives include the construction of a Rail Over Rail (RoR) flyover in Kosamba and a new rail bypass in Bhagalpur. These developments are set to ease congestion and streamline train operations across these critical regions.
New Rail Flyover at Kosamba
One of the approved projects is the construction of a Rail-over-Rail (RoR) flyover to facilitate seamless connectivity to the Kosamba–Umrapada Gauge Conversion (GC) section, which stretches over 9.20 kilometers. This project, estimated to cost ₹344.38 crore, is essential as it will allow efficient integration of the gauge-converted line with the Mumbai–Vadodara main line. Currently, the gauge conversion is underway, but due to the alignment of the Dedicated Freight Corridor, surface crossing is not feasible. This flyover will help eliminate such crossings, enabling safe and uninterrupted train movement along these vital routes.
Bhagalpur Bypass to Alleviate Congestion
The Ministry has also sanctioned the construction of a 13.38-kilometer bypass in Bhagalpur for an estimated cost of ₹303.20 crore. This bypass will connect Gonudham Halt on the Barahat-Bhagalpur line with Sabour on the Bhagalpur-Sahibganj section. The current Barahat–Bhagalpur section is operating at a staggering 125 percent capacity, leading to significant congestion at Bhagalpur junction. Trains operating in this area face delays due to the need for engine reversals, causing operational inefficiencies. With the new bypass, these issues are expected to be greatly reduced, resulting in improved punctuality and operational fluidity.
Both projects are poised to strengthen rail infrastructure in Gujarat and Bihar, improve safety standards, and reduce congestion. The Ministry of Railways aims to enhance train operations to meet the growing demands for both passenger and freight transportation across the country. By prioritizing capacity expansion and network decongestion, the Ministry is positioning the railways for a more efficient future.
