KKR Receives a Major Lift as ‘Fit and Ready’ Matheesha Pathirana Prepares to Join IPL 2026 Squad
Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have received a significant boost ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026, as Sri Lanka Cricket has confirmed that their star bowler Matheesha Pathirana is fit and ready to join the team. This news comes as a relief to KKR, who have been grappling with injury issues within their pace attack. Pathirana had been recovering from a calf strain sustained during the T20 World Cup, raising concerns about his availability for the tournament. However, with his rehabilitation complete, he is now cleared to participate in the league.
Sri Lanka Cricket Confirms Pathirana’s Fitness
Sri Lanka Cricket secretary Bandula Dissanayake announced that Matheesha Pathirana has successfully completed his rehabilitation and has been granted a No Objection Certificate (NOC) to participate in the IPL. Dissanayake stated, “As far as I know, he’s fit and we have given him NOC to participate in the IPL.” He emphasized that while Pathirana is fit, it will be up to the KKR franchise to assess his readiness for the upcoming matches. The exact timeline for when Pathirana will join the KKR squad remains uncertain, especially as the team prepares to depart for Mumbai ahead of their opening match against the Mumbai Indians on March 29.
KKR’s Pace Attack Faces Challenges
KKR’s fast-bowling lineup has faced significant challenges even before the season commenced. The franchise is currently without Harshit Rana, who is sidelined due to a knee ligament strain, and Mustafizur Rahman was released earlier. To fill the void, KKR has brought in Zimbabwean pacer Blessing Muzarabani. Additionally, several domestic bowlers, including Akash Madhwal and Navdeep Saini, have been undergoing trials alongside Simarjeet Singh. Pathirana’s return is particularly crucial for KKR, given his reputation as a death-over specialist. Known as “Baby Malinga” for his unique bowling action, he has taken 47 wickets in 32 matches since making his IPL debut with Chennai Super Kings in 2022.
KKR’s Preparations Intensify
As KKR gears up for the IPL season, the arrival of New Zealand players Finn Allen, Tim Seifert, and Rachin Ravindra will further bolster the squad. With key home fixtures scheduled at Eden Gardens against teams like Sunrisers Hyderabad, Punjab Kings, and Lucknow Super Giants, KKR is hopeful that Pathirana’s presence will enhance their chances of securing the title. The franchise is focused on solidifying their lineup and addressing the challenges posed by injuries, aiming for a strong start to the tournament.
