Thomson Targets India’s Mass Market with New Refrigerators, Bypasses Smart Technology Competition
Thomson, the French electronics brand, is making a significant move in the Indian market by launching a new line of refrigerators. In collaboration with Super Plastronics Pvt Ltd (SPPL), Thomson aims to provide value-driven products tailored to the needs of Indian households. The company is focusing on specific market gaps and consumer preferences, targeting first-time buyers and small families, while avoiding the crowded smart appliance segment.
Identifying Market Opportunities
Thomson’s entry into the Indian refrigerator market comes at a time when competition is fierce, with numerous established brands already in place. According to Avneet Singh Marwah, CEO of SPPL, the company has identified a substantial gap in the market. Approximately 95% of the refrigerator market is dominated by models ranging from 175 to 195 liters. Thomson plans to introduce mini refrigerators of around 100 liters, which are ideal for bachelors and small households, alongside 190-liter models that offer more space at a competitive price. Additionally, the company will launch 255-liter models, positioned just below frost-free categories, catering to consumers seeking larger capacities without the premium price tag. This strategic focus on underserved segments allows Thomson to differentiate itself from competitors.
Targeting the Right Consumers
Thomson’s marketing strategy is aimed at specific consumer groups, including bachelors, nuclear families, and first-time buyers, particularly in tier 1, 2, and 3 cities. These consumers are looking for trusted brands that deliver practical value. Marwah emphasized that the refrigerators are designed with Indian usage patterns in mind, addressing local challenges such as power cuts and high temperatures. The company has invested considerable time in understanding how Indian households store food, creating dedicated compartments for various items like curries, dairy, and vegetables. This localized approach ensures that the products meet the unique needs of Indian consumers.
Practical Innovation Over Smart Features
In a market where many brands are pushing smart features, Thomson is taking a different approach by prioritizing practical innovation. Marwah noted that while IoT and smart appliances have gained attention, actual consumer usage has not scaled as expected. Thomson aims to focus on ease of use and reliability rather than overwhelming consumers with unnecessary features. The company believes that if a feature does not genuinely enhance daily life, it becomes more of a marketing gimmick than a valuable addition. This philosophy aligns with Thomson’s commitment to providing refrigerators that are designed for real-life conditions in India.
Building Trust in a Competitive Landscape
Entering a market dominated by established brands poses challenges for Thomson, particularly in gaining consumer trust. However, the company has built a solid reputation through its existing product lines, such as televisions, which have garnered millions of satisfied customers and positive online ratings. Thomson’s exclusive partnership with Flipkart has further bolstered its credibility, as customer reviews and ratings play a crucial role in purchase decisions. Additionally, the company has invested in a robust service infrastructure, covering 19,000 pin codes across India, ensuring reliable support for consumers. While Thomson currently operates as an online-first brand, it remains open to exploring offline experience centers in the future, depending on market dynamics.
With its refrigerator launch, Thomson is poised to challenge the status quo in one of India’s most competitive appliance segments. By focusing on value-driven offerings and understanding local consumer needs, the brand aims to carve out a niche in a market traditionally dominated by legacy players. The success of this approach will unfold in the coming months as Thomson seeks to establish itself as a trusted name in Indian households.
