Workshop Empowers Tribal Homestay Owners for Sustainable Tourism

The Ministry of Tribal Affairs (MoTA) of the Government of India recently hosted a successful Capacity Building Workshop for Tribal Homestay Owners at Hotel Samrat in New Delhi. This initiative, organized in collaboration with the India Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC), aimed to enhance the livelihoods of tribal communities by promoting community-led and sustainable tourism.

Gathering tribal homestay owners and their teams from states like Gujarat, Arunachal Pradesh, and Sikkim, the workshop emphasized the government’s commitment to uplifting tribal livelihoods through tourism. Sh. Manish Thakur, Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Tribal Affairs, led the session, providing participants with valuable insights into various flagship tribal welfare schemes designed to bolster grassroots entrepreneurship.

Highlighting Key Government Initiatives

The workshop served as a platform to showcase essential government programmes reinforcing infrastructure and economic opportunities in tribal regions. Among these initiatives was the PM JANMAN (PM Janjati Adivasi Nyaya Maha Abhiyan), which targets Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs) by improving key infrastructures such as housing, roads, healthcare, and education. This initiative lays the groundwork for tourism development in remote tribal areas.

Another notable program discussed was DAJGUA (Development Action Plan for Scheduled Tribes), which takes a convergence-based approach to enhance livelihood generation, skill development, and cultural preservation. This framework helps tribal communities achieve sustainable and dignified economic growth.

The Adi Karmayogi Abhiyan was also highlighted as a crucial capacity-building initiative. It focuses on boosting digital literacy, governance awareness, and entrepreneurial skills amongst tribal stakeholders, enabling them to better access and utilize governmental schemes.

Supporting Tribal Entrepreneurs

In his address, Sh. Manish Thakur remarked, “Tribal homestay owners are not merely entrepreneurs—they are ambassadors of India’s rich indigenous heritage. Government initiatives are ensuring that tribal communities grow sustainably while preserving their cultural identity.” This statement underscores the vital role that these entrepreneurs play in reflecting and promoting India’s diverse cultures.

A National Vision for Inclusive Growth

The workshop underscores a broader national vision that aims to promote inclusive tourism, strengthen local livelihoods in tribal regions, and encourage cultural preservation through economic empowerment. By merging tourism with developmental strategies, the government aspires to direct the benefits of India’s flourishing tourism industry to tribal heartlands effectively.
