Bihar Hosts Workshop on Sustainable Development and Gender Statistics
The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI), in collaboration with the Government of Bihar and supported by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) India, has convened a two-day workshop focused on building capacity for sustainable development. Titled “Capacity Building Workshop on Monitoring Frameworks of Sustainable Development Goals, Compilation of Environment Accounts, and Gender Statistics,” the event aims to enhance the collection and analysis of crucial data necessary for evidence-based governance.
The workshop kicked off with an inaugural session featuring prominent figures such as Bihar’s Hon’ble Minister of Planning and Development, Shri Bijendra Prasad Yadav, along with key representatives from MoSPI, the Bihar government, and UNDP. Minister Yadav highlighted the significance of producing timely and reliable data to foster sustainable development and work towards the ambitious goal of a Viksit Bharat by 2047. He stressed that data should reflect the specific realities of states, ensuring that analyses are rooted in ground conditions.
Emphasizing Data Collection
Dr. Saurabh Garg, Secretary of MoSPI, reiterated the necessity of collecting comprehensive data to facilitate effective policymaking and monitoring. He acknowledged the efforts of various states in undertaking detailed data collection, which aids in tailored local planning and interventions. Furthermore, he discussed MoSPI’s initiatives aimed at harmonizing administrative data through coordination with Indian states.
The Chief Secretary of Bihar, Shri Pratyaya Amrit, praised the state’s achievements regarding Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and noted its positive progress in gender-related indicators. He reiterated the importance of data in informed decision-making, crucial for realizing Bihar’s aspirations for a prosperous future by 2047.
Global Insights and Local Data Usage
Dr. Angela Lusigi from UNDP emphasized the importance of measurement in accelerating sustainable progress, advocating for localized data collection to better track investments and identify gaps. The workshop served as a platform for various stakeholders, including government officials, experts, and international representatives, to engage in discussions about using data effectively to support SDG monitoring, gender statistics, and environmental accounting.
More than 200 participants attended the workshop, discussing themes such as gender-responsive policies, data disaggregation, and the integration of environmental accounting in governance. Among the notable outcomes was the release of three significant reports by MoSPI, detailing environmental accounting, sustainability, and economic transformation under the SDGs, now available on the MoSPI website.

The comprehensive approach to capacity building across three critical areas—SDGs, environment, and gender statistics—highlighted the necessity for enhanced data collection and policy integration. The discussions not only provided insights into best practices and initiatives from India but also examined international experiences in advancing gender statistics.
The workshop concluded with key takeaways emphasizing the need for granular data, stronger inter-departmental collaboration, and ongoing support from international agencies to further India’s commitments towards sustainable development, gender equality, and environmental accountability.
