India Unveils Ambitious Goals at Bharat Electricity Summit 2026

The Bharat Electricity Summit 2026 kicked off today at Yashobhoomi, New Delhi, inaugurated by Union Minister of Power and Housing & Urban Affairs, Sh. Manohar Lal. This four-day global conference and exhibition, centered on the power sector, brought together key figures including Shri Pralhad Joshi, Minister of New and Renewable Energy, and Shri Shripad Naik, Minister of State for Power. The summit promises to serve as a platform for discussing India’s evolving energy landscape.
During his keynote address, Minister Sh. Manohar Lal extolled India’s impressive achievements in the energy sector, highlighting that the country met its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) target of 50% cumulative non-fossil electric capacity nearly five years ahead of schedule. He pointed out unprecedented investment opportunities amounting to approximately INR 200 lakh crore in the power sector over the next twenty years. His speech outlined India’s notable expansion in transmission infrastructure, which has grown by 72%, and its capacity to meet a peak demand of 270 GW and beyond.
“Today is not just another day; it is a day of resolve for India’s energy transformation,” said Sh. Manohar Lal. He spoke about the shift from conventional energy sources to harnessing solar power, indicating a commitment to sustainability. He described this summit as not merely an event, but as part of a broader movement aimed at establishing India as a leader in the global energy market.
Future of Renewable Energy
Shri Pralhad Joshi reinforced the notion that while thermal power will be essential for the energy system, the future lies in renewable sources. The Minister emphasized the importance of a balanced transition that focuses on scale, speed, and skill. Shri Shripad Naik added that India’s installed power capacity has more than doubled since 2014, showcasing a significant shift towards renewable energy.
Shri Pankaj Agarwal, Secretary of the Ministry of Power, noted that India boasts one of the largest synchronized grids in the world, supported by sophisticated balancing systems and smart meter deployment. He stated, “India’s power sector transformation offers a strong global model, characterized by policy clarity and innovation. The next phase of development will leverage technology and global partnerships to build a more efficient power system.”
Strategic Reports Released
At the inaugural session, the Ministry of Power unveiled critical strategic documents, including the National Resource Adequacy Plan and the Transmission Plan for Integration of over 900 GW Non-Fossil Fuel Capacity by 2035-36. The transmission plan aims to develop 137,500 circuit kilometers of transmission lines, requiring an investment of ₹7.93 lakh crore, to ensure the seamless integration of renewable energy within the grid.
The Bharat Electricity Summit 2026 is poised to be a landmark event, featuring over 300 speakers, 100 high-level sessions, and participation from more than 80 countries. With over 500 exhibitors, including startups and a wide audience expected to exceed 25,000 visitors, this summit stands as one of the premier platforms for dialogue on global electricity issues.
