Rs. 760 Crore Investment Boosts Haryana’s Fisheries Sector
The Haryana government’s fisheries sector is set for a significant transformation with a financial infusion of Rs. 760.87 crore from the Department of Fisheries. This investment, part of the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY), includes a central share of Rs. 262.16 crore aimed at enhancing fisheries infrastructure and promoting aquaculture activities across the state. Over the past five years, these initiatives are expected to create substantial employment opportunities and improve the livelihoods of local fish farmers.
Major Development Initiatives Under PMMSY
The Government of Haryana has been proactive in utilizing the funds allocated under PMMSY. So far, the central government has released Rs. 168.61 crore to help implement various approved projects. Significant developments include the construction of 3,766 hectares of new grow-out and rearing ponds, including areas identified as saline and alkaline. In addition to this, the state has established 166 fish kiosks, set up 130 units for Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS), and 326 Biofloc units. Furthermore, the establishment of 11 new freshwater finfish hatcheries and 48 fish feed mills will bolster the state’s aquaculture capacity.
Supporting Local Fish Farmers
The support for fish farmers in Haryana has been substantial, with financial assistance amounting to Rs. 514.51 lakh to those in Hisar and Rs. 1,151.95 lakh to farmers in Karnal. These interventions are driving a Blue Revolution in Haryana, significantly promoting aquaculture and delivering numerous benefits to communities, particularly among women and Scheduled Castes. By empowering these groups to engage in aquaculture, the state is not only enhancing their income but also providing new sources of livelihood.
A Legislative Discussion
This impressive progress was shared by Shri Rajiv Ranjan Singh, the Minister of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairying, during discussions in the Rajya Sabha. Responding to inquiries about the status of aquaculture development in Haryana, he highlighted that the initiatives under PMMSY have catalyzed the growth of the fisheries sector, ultimately aiming to alleviate poverty and improve living standards in rural areas.
