IPL 2026: Aakash Chopra Critiques Rajasthan Royals’ ‘Inexperienced’ Squad and Riyan Parag’s Role
Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra has raised concerns regarding the Rajasthan Royals’ (RR) batting lineup ahead of the IPL 2026 season. He highlighted the team’s youthful and relatively inexperienced batting core as a significant challenge. The Royals made notable trades before the auction, including sending Sanju Samson to Chennai Super Kings and acquiring Sam Curran and Ravindra Jadeja in return. Additionally, they traded Nitish Rana to Delhi Capitals and brought in Donovan Ferreira.
Youthful Batting Core Under Scrutiny
Chopra emphasized that the Rajasthan Royals’ batting unit is predominantly composed of young players, which could pose challenges during the upcoming season. In a recent video on his YouTube channel, he pointed out that names like Yashasvi Jaiswal, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, and Dhruv Jurel are central to the team’s batting strategy. While Jaiswal has some experience, he is still considered young. Sooryavanshi has shown promise with his hitting but remains untested at the IPL level. Jurel, despite his potential, has yet to make a significant impact in the league. Chopra noted, “You can call it weaknesses or challenges. The batting lineup is extremely young.”
The reliance on these young talents raises questions about their ability to perform consistently under pressure. Chopra’s analysis suggests that while there is a lot of potential, the lack of experience could hinder the team’s performance, especially in high-stakes matches. The Royals will need to find ways to support their young batsmen to ensure they can rise to the occasion when it matters most.
Experience Gap a Growing Concern
Chopra also pointed out the experience gap within the Royals’ batting order. He acknowledged Riyan Parag’s promise as a captain but noted that he has yet to establish himself on the international stage. The situation is further complicated by Shimron Hetmyer’s role, as the team may struggle to utilize him in his preferred batting position. Parag is set to lead the Royals in the IPL 2026 season, but Chopra expressed concerns about the overall experience of the squad.
“Riyan Parag has shown a lot of promise and potential, but he is not an established international star,” Chopra remarked. He highlighted that while Hetmyer is a valuable asset, the team may not be able to position him effectively based on his past success. Donovan Ferreira’s limited international experience adds to the uncertainty surrounding the batting lineup. Chopra concluded that the lack of international exposure among the top-order batsmen could be a significant hurdle for the Royals as they aim for success in the upcoming season.
Spin Attack Faces Form Concerns
In addition to batting concerns, Chopra identified issues within the Royals’ spin bowling department. He noted that while the spin bowling options have improved, their recent form raises questions. “The spin bowling stocks have gone up for sure, but the current form is a slight issue,” he stated. Ravi Bishnoi, who had a disappointing previous season, was released, which reflects the team’s need for reliable performers in this area.
Chopra also mentioned Ravindra Jadeja, who, despite his impressive track record, has struggled with wicket-taking in T20 cricket over the past couple of seasons. “Jadeja, again a great addition, but his current form in T20 cricket, from a wicket-taking ability perspective, is not great,” he explained. Bishnoi’s performance in IPL 2025, where he took nine wickets in 11 innings with a high economy rate, further illustrates the challenges facing the Royals’ spin attack. Jadeja’s statistics from last season, with ten wickets in 14 matches, also highlight the need for improvement. The Royals will need to address these concerns to strengthen their bowling lineup for the upcoming season.
