India’s Crude Oil Supply Remains Strong Amid Middle East Conflict

Union Minister Piyush Goyal assured the nation on Saturday that India is well-equipped to manage any disruptions in crude oil and fuel supplies amid escalating tensions in the Middle East. He emphasized that there has been no interruption in the availability of petrol, diesel, or aviation fuel. Goyal also announced that the government will introduce a detailed plan next week to assist exporters affected by the ongoing conflict, highlighting the country’s preparedness in the face of global energy challenges.

India’s Fuel Supply Stability

During a recent event hosted by CNBC-TV18, Goyal stated that India has adequate fuel stocks and has implemented precautionary measures to mitigate potential disruptions in gas shipments and maritime routes due to the ongoing crisis. He reassured the public that there has been “absolutely no disturbance” in the supply of essential fuels, including petrol, diesel, and aviation fuel. The minister noted that kerosene production has been increased to provide an alternative cooking option in case of delays in LPG supplies. He mentioned that the government is also diversifying its sources for LPG and LNG imports to ensure consistent availability.

Goyal’s comments come as the geopolitical landscape becomes increasingly volatile, with traditional shipping routes facing challenges. He expressed confidence in India’s ability to navigate these difficulties, stating that the country is well-prepared to handle any potential fallout from the crisis.

Shifting to Alternative Energy Sources

Goyal highlighted the necessity for India to explore more distant sources for gas imports as traditional shipping routes become less reliable. He explained that the shipping times for gas shipments, which used to take only a few days, are now extending significantly. As a result, India is considering alternative suppliers from countries such as Canada, the United States, and possibly Russia to meet its domestic energy needs.

Describing the current geopolitical situation as a “wake-up call,” Goyal acknowledged the short-term economic pressures but remained optimistic about India’s long-term growth prospects. He stated that while there may be a temporary decline in economic activity, India is poised to continue as the fastest-growing large economy for the next two decades. He also addressed concerns regarding the rupee, indicating that while it is under stress, there is no cause for panic, and he expects a gradual recovery.

Support for Exporters Amidst Global Challenges

In response to the challenges faced by exporters due to the ongoing conflict, Goyal announced that the commerce ministry is actively engaging with export promotion councils. The ministry has established a 24-hour helpline to address any issues exporters may encounter. Goyal emphasized the importance of communication and support during these trying times.

Additionally, the government is developing schemes to provide insurance coverage for export cargo that may be damaged, lost, or delayed due to disruptions in shipping routes, particularly in the Red Sea and the Strait of Hormuz. Goyal indicated that a more concrete action plan to support exporters will be unveiled next week, following inter-ministerial consultations.

Government Preparedness for Energy Supply Disruptions

Earlier, Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri assured the Lok Sabha that India is prepared for prolonged disruptions in global energy supplies resulting from the Middle East conflict. He noted that commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for global oil and gas, has effectively shut down. In response, India has increased its sourcing of crude oil from non-Hormuz routes to approximately 70%, up from 55% prior to the conflict.

Puri also highlighted that India now imports oil from 40 countries, a significant increase from 27 in 2006-07. He reiterated that there is no shortage of essential fuels, including petrol, diesel, kerosene, and LPG, and that domestic LPG production has been ramped up by 28%. The government is prioritizing gas supplies for households, transportation, and agricultural needs, ensuring that essential services remain uninterrupted during this crisis.
