India Plans Major Renewable Energy Transmission Advancements

The Indian government is on an ambitious path to boost renewable energy integration, with plans to develop extensive Green Energy Corridors (GEC) and expand the Inter-State Transmission System (ISTS). The aim is to integrate over 500 gigawatts (GW) of non-fossil fuel generation capacity by 2030 and to elevate that number to over 600 GW by 2032. This initiative follows the guidelines set by the National Electricity Plan (NEP), which forecasts a transmission network expansion to 648,000 circuit kilometers and a transformation capacity reaching 2,345 Giga Volt Ampere (GVA) by 2031-32.

To enhance the country’s inter-regional transmission capacity, the government plans to increase its capacity from 120 GW in January 2026 to 168 GW by 2032. Transmission schemes associated with renewable energy generation are being implemented in phases to ensure timely integration with the growing renewable energy capacity.

Major Projects Underway

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) is spearheading the GEC initiative across ten states, including Rajasthan, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu. This scheme is being implemented in two phases, known as GEC-I and GEC-II, aiming to facilitate the evacuation of 44 GW of renewable energy. Currently, 26 GW has already been integrated, and plans for a GEC-III scheme for additional renewable energy integration are in the pipeline.

Addressing Intermittency with Advanced Solutions

To tackle the challenges of intermittency from renewable sources, the government promotes a blend of energy storage solutions and hybrid systems. Under the NEP, a transmission strategy for 35.6 GW of Pumped Storage Projects (PSP) has already been mapped out, with targets to achieve 100 GW of PSPs between 2025-2026 and 2035-2036. Additionally, about 47 GW of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) are proposed for integration by 2031-32, supported by two Viability Gap Funding schemes announced in 2024 and 2025.

Support for Rooftop Solar Initiatives

To encourage the adoption of Rooftop Solar (RTS) systems, the MNRE has launched the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana (PMSG: MBY). The scheme aims to install solar rooftops in one crore households by the financial year 2026-27, with a budget allocation of ₹75,021 crore. The government has streamlined the process for RTS adoption, making it user-friendly through an online platform for subsidy applications and offering loans at concessional rates.

As of February 2026, 31.04 lakh households have benefitted from rooftop solar installations under this scheme. Improved regulatory processes and financial incentives are part of the efforts to promote distributed generation, aiming to alleviate pressure on the national grid while enhancing energy accessibility.

Future Outlook

The Indian government’s proactive steps towards enhancing the renewable energy transmission infrastructure are pivotal in ensuring the seamless integration of rising renewable capacities across the country. As of January 2026, the installed renewable energy capacity stands at approximately 263 GW, with another 207 GW of anticipated wind and solar capabilities in various stages of implementation. Additional hydroelectric capacity of about 19 GW is also planned by 2030, indicating a robust commitment to clean energy.
