India Boosts Tourism Skills with Nationwide Training Initiative

The Ministry of Tourism is taking significant steps to enhance the skills of individuals in the hospitality and tourism sectors through its innovative program, the Capacity Building for Service Providers (CBSP). This initiative, aimed at skilling, upskilling, and re-skilling trainees from diverse backgrounds, including local communities and tribal areas, has successfully trained over 168,000 individuals since its inception.

Implemented via government institutions and accredited private entities, such as the Indian Institute of Hotel Management and various Food Craft Institutes, the CBSP program operates across multiple states, including Rajasthan and Maharashtra. According to a third-party evaluation conducted by the Quality Council of India in 2025, the initiative has not only equipped a vast number of trainees with vital skills but has also placed over 36,000 individuals in various roles within the tourism and hospitality sectors from FY 2020-21 to 2024-25.

Empowering Local Communities Through Training

In 2024, the Ministry announced the Paryatan Mitra/Paryatan Didi initiative, aiming to bolster responsible tourism practices by providing specialized training for local service providers. This program targets a broad range of individuals, including cab and auto drivers, railway and airport staff, hotel and restaurant employees, tour guides, and even vendors and shopkeepers. Special emphasis is placed on ensuring women and marginalized communities are included in this training.

The training focuses on crucial areas such as tourism awareness, cleanliness, safety, sustainability, and delivering top-notch hospitality to enhance the overall tourist experience. To date, approximately 4,382 candidates have benefited from this vital initiative.

Future Goals and Partnerships

To further expand the reach of the CBSP scheme, efforts are being made to update and broaden the curriculum to align with industry needs. This development aims to improve the tourist experience while fostering sustainable growth for local communities. Detailed records of funding patterns, the number of trainings conducted, and the placements achieved during the past three years have been compiled for states like Maharashtra and Rajasthan.

Additionally, to maintain high standards of service and hospitality, the Ministry has formalized collaborations by signing Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with 21 Central Institutes of Hotel Management and eight prominent hospitality groups. These include renowned names such as Indian Hotels Company Ltd., IHG Hotels and Resorts, Marriott Hotels, and many others.

This initiative is part of the Government’s broader commitment to develop a robust hospitality workforce that meets international standards, ensuring that the growing tourism sector in India remains competitive and sustainable.
