India Launches Innovative Diagnostic Kit for Child Diarrhea
The Technology Development Board (TDB) of the Indian Government’s Department of Science & Technology has announced its financial backing for M/s BabyCue Private Limited, based in Cuttack, Odisha. This support is directed towards the development of an innovative project titled “A Disposable Paper Analytical Platform for Rapid Differentiation of Childhood Diarrhea.” This initiative aims to bring to market a rapid diagnostic kit that will aid in accurately identifying the causes of diarrhea in children, specifically distinguishing between bacterial and non-bacterial infections.
A Breakthrough in Diagnostic Technology
Introducing the DiaCue Diagnostic Kit, a notable indigenous advancement that fuses biotechnology and materials science to combat the prevalent public health issue of childhood diarrhea in India. Designed as a rapid, non-invasive, and cost-effective diagnostic solution, the kit can be efficiently utilized in low-resource settings such as rural health centers and remote field locations.
How DiaCue Works
The DiaCue platform operates using Lateral Flow Assay (LFA) technology, which detects specific fecal biomarkers indicative of disease. Utilizing gold nanoparticle-based colorimetric detection, it allows healthcare providers to interpret results visually without the need for advanced laboratory equipment. Thanks to its proprietary biomarkers and specially designed reagents, the kit promises high sensitivity and specificity, making it reliable for discerning the nature of the infection.
The testing procedure is straightforward. A fresh stool sample is collected and mixed with a buffer solution, which is then applied to the LFA strip. As the sample flows along the strip, it interacts with immobilized reagents, resulting in a visible color change. The presence of colored lines indicates the type of infection, enabling clinicians to make informed decisions within minutes.
Benefits of the DiaCue Diagnostic Platform
This innovative technology offers multiple advantages, including rapid differentiation of diarrhea types, a reduction in unnecessary antibiotic prescriptions, and minimal reliance on complex laboratory setups. This makes it suitable for use in both clinical settings and in the field.
Collaboration and Validation
The development of this groundbreaking technology has been in collaboration with the National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research in Hyderabad. Furthermore, it has undergone clinical validation at ESIC Hospital in Hyderabad. Notably, the proprietary detection method is safeguarded by an international patent application, ensuring the protection of intellectual property and supporting future commercialization.
Official Remarks
Shri Rajesh Kumar Pathak, Secretary of TDB, emphasized the importance of indigenous rapid diagnostics for enhancing primary healthcare services. He stated, “By facilitating the commercialization of the DiaCue diagnostic platform, TDB aims to advance accessible, affordable, and technologically-driven healthcare solutions to tackle pressing public health challenges, including childhood diarrhea.”
Future Prospects
Officials at BabyCue Private Limited expressed their gratitude for TDB’s support, highlighting that this funding will enable them to speed up product development and expand manufacturing capabilities. The ultimate goal is to broadly distribute this vital diagnostic solution, benefiting healthcare providers and patients alike.
