Jwala the Cheetah Welcomes Five Cubs at Kuno National Park
In an exciting development for wildlife conservation in India, Jwala, a Namibian cheetah, has successfully given birth to five healthy cubs at Kuno National Park. Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Shri Bhupender Yadav, announced this heartwarming news on social media, highlighting the significance of this event in the context of Project Cheetah.
This new birth brings the total number of Indian-born cheetah cubs to 33, marking the 10th successful litter born in India. This is a milestone not only for the cheetah population but also for the ongoing efforts dedicated to their conservation.
A Major Step for Project Cheetah
Shri Yadav expressed immense pride in this achievement, stating that it reflects the relentless hard work and commitment of veterinarians, field staff, and all those involved in the conservation initiatives at Kuno National Park. The Minister noted that with the addition of these five cubs, the total cheetah population in India stands at 53.
Hope for the Future
Describing this event as a historical and uplifting moment for wildlife conservation, Yadav offered his best wishes for Jwala and her new cubs, hoping they will thrive and contribute to India’s cheetah revival story. The successful births follow recent encouraging news when another cheetah, Gamini, gave birth to four cubs, further boosting the population.
In line with its conservation efforts, the Indian government has also been working to introduce more cheetahs into Kuno National Park. On February 28, 2026, Shri Yadav released nine cheetahs, comprising six females and three males, received from Botswana. These animals are currently undergoing a period of acclimatization and health monitoring in quarantine enclosures before they are integrated into the larger landscape of the park.
As India continues to embrace its commitment to wildlife conservation, the successful births of these cheetah cubs signify not just a recovery for the species but also a hopeful outlook for future generations of cheetahs in the wild.
