Union Minister Discusses Boosting Coconut Farming in Tamil Nadu
In a pivotal gathering in Chennai, Union Minister for Agriculture, Farmers’ Welfare, and Rural Development, Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan, engaged in significant discussions with coconut farmers, scientists, and agricultural experts. The meeting, held post-Budget, aimed to address the challenges facing the coconut sector and strategies to elevate production and farmer incomes.
Expressing his joy at being in Tamil Nadu, a region he deeply respects for its cultural richness, Shri Chouhan emphasized the state’s vital role in coconut production. He highlighted that around 1.25 crore farmers nationwide are involved in coconut cultivation, and approximately three crore people rely on the sector for their livelihoods.
Challenges in the Coconut Sector
During his address, the Minister outlined several obstacles plaguing coconut farmers, including aging plantations and pest-related diseases that hinder productivity. He noted that many coconut trees are nearly 60 years old, leading to decreased yields. He stressed that innovative solutions and coordinated efforts are essential to confront these issues effectively.
Government Initiatives for Coconut Development
To tackle these challenges, Shri Chouhan announced plans for the development of advanced, disease-resistant coconut varieties aimed at increasing the quality and quantity of production. These initiatives are intended to strengthen India’s position in the global coconut export market.
The Minister also revealed the government’s commitment to expanding the Coconut Promotion Scheme, launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This initiative seeks to enhance production, processing, and intercropping, which could significantly boost the income of coconut farmers. By promoting intercropping alongside traditional coconut farming, he believes farmers can diversify their income sources.
Support and Infrastructure Improvement
Shri Chouhan assured farmers of enhanced facilities and institutional support. Key measures include establishing new plantations to replace unproductive orchards, developing high-quality nurseries, and advancing modern processing capabilities. A particular focus will be placed on increasing value addition in coconut-based products.
Consultations are ongoing with farmers and state governments to finalize the Coconut Promotion Scheme, which will help create a robust institutional framework for the coconut sector’s future. The Minister expressed optimism that nearly 28 percent of Tamil Nadu’s coconut farmers would benefit from these forthcoming initiatives.
Emphasizing Cultural Diversity
In addition to discussing farming issues, Shri Chouhan recognized India’s linguistic diversity. He encouraged participants to use their mother tongues during discussions and suggested the provision of translation services to facilitate better communication. This approach, he argued, would enhance dialogue and showcase India’s rich cultural tapestry while promoting a sense of national unity.
