Former India Cricketer Calls for Abhishek Sharma’s Omission from T20 World Cup Final

Former Indian cricketer Mohammad Kaif has called for a significant change in the team lineup ahead of the T20 World Cup 2026 final against New Zealand. He suggests that opener Abhishek Sharma, who has struggled throughout the tournament, should be rested for the crucial match. Kaif believes that the Indian management, led by head coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Suryakumar Yadav, should not hesitate to make this adjustment to enhance their chances of victory at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday.

Abhishek Sharma’s Struggles

Abhishek Sharma has faced a challenging tournament, managing to score over 50 runs only once. His performance has been particularly hindered by difficulties against spin bowling, with opposition teams targeting this weakness during the powerplay. On four occasions, he has fallen victim to spin bowlers, often trying to play aggressively from the start. This aggressive style, which usually defines his batting, has not yielded results in this tournament. Instead of adapting his approach, he has continued to struggle with rotating the strike and settling in at the crease.

Adding to his challenges, Abhishek dealt with a stomach infection prior to the tournament, which led to hospitalization and noticeable weight loss. This health issue has seemingly impacted his physical strength, bat swing, and overall confidence. His difficulties have also extended to the field, where he dropped two catches during India’s Super 8s match against the West Indies. Given these factors, Kaif believes it may be time for the team to consider a change in the lineup.

Rinku Singh as a Potential Replacement

Kaif has proposed that Rinku Singh should be brought into the squad for the final match. He emphasized that resting Abhishek could be beneficial, noting that changes can be effective in the shortest format of the game. He referenced the example of Roston Chase, who was given a break after struggling, allowing the team to make a strategic adjustment for a crucial match. Kaif pointed out that Rinku Singh has consistently performed well across formats, including Tests, the Ranji Trophy, and the IPL.

He argued that with Abhishek struggling, it makes sense to utilize the talent available on the bench. Kaif stated, “When you look in the dugout to see who can replace Abhishek Sharma, you see Rinku Singh sitting there. So, bring him in. A guy is struggling, and another guy is sitting outside despite doing well.” This perspective highlights the importance of making tactical decisions based on current form and performance.

Sanju Samson’s Impact

The Indian team management has already made adjustments by reintroducing Sanju Samson into the playing XI, a decision that has paid off significantly. Samson has delivered match-winning performances against both the West Indies and England, earning Player of the Match honors in both encounters. Kaif noted that Samson’s experience in high-pressure situations sets him apart from Abhishek, who is still relatively new to international tournaments.

Kaif remarked on the differences in their experiences, stating, “The biggest difference between Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson is that Abhishek is still quite new to ICC events.” He acknowledged Abhishek’s impressive record outside of ICC tournaments but emphasized the unique challenges posed by such high-stakes competitions. In contrast, Samson has a wealth of experience, having scored over 8,000 runs in T20s and established himself as a top player in the IPL.
