India’s Minister to Address Global Women’s Rights at UN

Minister of State for Women and Child Development, Smt. Savitri Thakur, is set to participate in the 70th Session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW-70) at the United Nations Headquarters in New York from March 9 to March 12, 2026. This important global forum focuses on promoting gender equality and empowering women, making it a key platform for dialogue and action on women’s rights.

During her visit, Minister Thakur will present India’s national intervention in the General Discussion of the Commission. She is also scheduled to speak at a High-Level Meeting addressing the critical issue of violence against women and girls. In her remarks, she will emphasize India’s initiatives aimed at fostering women-led development, enhancing access to justice, and ensuring the safety and dignity of women and girls across the nation.

Supporting Women through International Collaboration

In addition to her primary engagements, the Minister will take part in a side event titled “Women-Led Development and South-South Cooperation – Success Stories from the IBSA Fund.” This event, hosted by the Permanent Mission of India to the United Nations, will showcase successful development initiatives from the India-Brazil-South Africa (IBSA) Fund, which focus on empowering women and promoting inclusive development across various nations in the Global South.

The central theme of CSW-70 centers around “Ensuring and strengthening access to justice for all women and girls.” The discussions aim to promote equitable legal systems, eliminate discriminatory laws and practices, and address existing structural barriers that hinder women’s rights. The session will also review women’s full and effective participation in public life, aiming to bolster decision-making roles for women while combating violence against them.

India’s Commitment to Gender Equality

The Commission will engage in negotiations aimed at reaching agreed conclusions that serve as the main outcomes of the session, shaping global policy commitments to enhance gender equality and women’s empowerment. Minister Thakur’s participation underscores India’s strong commitment to advancing these significant issues on an international stage.
