Mizoram’s Rail Revolution Boosts Economy and Tourism
Mizoram is undergoing a remarkable transformation with the launch of passenger and freight train services, enhancing both travel and the transport of goods across the state. This advancement not only fosters better connectivity but also propels economic growth and bolsters the region’s tourism sector.
A historic milestone was achieved on March 3, 2026, when the first Food Corporation of India (FCI) cargo train arrived at Sairang Railway Station. The train consisted of 42 wagons loaded with approximately 25,900 quintals of rice sourced from Punjab. This event is significant in enhancing rail-based freight connectivity in Mizoram, improving the supply chain for essential goods. The successful unloading of this cargo marks a key development in Sairang’s operational capabilities and emphasizes the critical role of railway infrastructure in the state’s logistics and food distribution network.
The inauguration of the 51.38 km Bairabi-Sairang railway line by the Prime Minister on September 13, 2025, was a pivotal moment for Mizoram, placing Aizawl on India’s railway map. The new line not only facilitates transportation but is anticipated to create substantial economic opportunities and attract more tourism in the region.
Freight Performance in Mizoram
Since the beginning of operations on the Bairabi-Sairang line, the freight services have seen impressive growth. Shortly after its inauguration, the first freight rake of 21 cement wagons was dispatched to Sairang, initiating regular freight transport to the State. Between April 2025 and March 2026, Sairang Terminal processed over 30 freight rakes, marking significant progress in rail-based cargo transport. This included 3.5 rakes of cement, along with other commodities such as automobiles, fertilizers, stone chips, and sand, indicating the evolving role of Sairang as a vital freight hub in Mizoram.
Additionally, the first automobile rake carrying 119 passenger vehicles arrived at Sairang in December 2025, showcasing the line’s ability to manage high-value bulk shipments. Indian Railways has also launched initiatives to enhance parcel logistics, including refrigerated vans for transporting perishable goods, aiding local farmers and traders in accessing larger markets.
Tourism Gains Momentum in Mizoram
The newly completed railway line has significantly boosted tourism in Mizoram, leading to an increase in the number of visitors in the past six months. A notable achievement was the arrival of the Bharat Gaurav Deluxe AC Tourist Train at Sairang Railway Station on February 12, 2026, as part of the “North East Discovery” initiative. This luxurious train carried 81 tourists from India and abroad, including travelers from the United States and Nepal, marking Mizoram’s growing appeal on the global tourism landscape.
This improved accessibility has not only attracted more tourists but has also generated job opportunities in the hospitality sector, further promoting eco-tourism and cultural experiences. Mizoram is becoming a key destination in Northeast India within the larger framework of inclusive growth and regional cooperation.
Increasing Passenger Footfall
Since the launch of train services on the Bairabi-Sairang route in September 2025, there has been an overwhelming response from the public. The Sairang-Anand Vihar Rajdhani Express has recorded occupancy rates exceeding 150%, while both the Sairang-Guwahati Express and Sairang-Kolkata Express have also enjoyed strong ridership, indicating a robust demand for these services. On February 9, 2026, a new train service connecting Sairang to Silchar was inaugurated, enhancing regional connectivity and linking Mizoram to Assam’s important educational, medical, and commercial center, Barak Valley.
The expansion of railway infrastructure signals a transformative shift for Mizoram. It is crucial in boosting transportation, stimulating economic growth, and enhancing tourism, making the state more accessible and appealing to visitors. As developments continue, Mizoram is poised to emerge as a prominent destination in Northeast India.
