India and Japan Enhance Economic Ties at CEPA Meeting

The 7th Joint Committee Meeting under the India–Japan Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) took place on March 2, 2026, in Tokyo, Japan. Co-chaired by Shri Rajesh Agrawal, Secretary of the Department of Commerce in India, and a senior official from Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the meeting focused on reviewing the current CEPA implementation and discussing strategies to bolster economic collaboration between the two nations.

Strengthening Bilateral Trade

During the discussions, both parties deliberated on enhancing bilateral trade and investment, particularly in light of the upcoming 14th Ministerial Conference of the World Trade Organization (WTO). Shri Agrawal also held a significant meeting with Japan’s Vice Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), emphasizing the shared vision between the countries’ leaders, articulated during their Annual Summit in August 2025.

Maximizing Economic Potential

In his talks with the METI Vice Minister, Shri Agrawal pointed out the importance of diversifying and enhancing bilateral trade, citing the strong cooperative advantages between India and Japan. He noted Japan’s expertise in technology and capital, combined with India’s skilled workforce and expansive market, as key factors that could accelerate economic growth. He reiterated the need to fully leverage the CEPA’s benefits, including provisions related to the mobility of professionals.

Opportunities in Key Sectors

Shri Agrawal highlighted the vast potential for Indian exports to Japan in various sectors such as textiles, pharmaceuticals, agriculture, and services. He stressed the necessity of achieving a balanced trade relationship to ensure lasting sustainability.

Roundtable Interaction and Trade Show

Following the meeting, the Commerce Secretary engaged with leading figures in Japanese industry during a roundtable discussion, where they explored further opportunities for collaboration. That evening, a Trade and Investment Roadshow was organized by the Indian Embassy in Japan, in partnership with the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and Keidanren, aimed at promoting Indian trade and attracting Japanese investments.

Fostering a Conducive Environment

During the roadshow, Shri Agrawal informed participants about India’s favorable policy framework for trade and investments, which includes ongoing initiatives to improve the business landscape and streamline regulatory processes. He asserted that the CEPA offers a robust framework characterized by tariff stability and regulatory predictability, essential for deeper collaboration between India and Japan as partners in the global supply chain.
