Brent Crude Oil Surpasses $85 as Strait of Hormuz Supply Route Faces Disruption

Oil prices surged dramatically on Tuesday as escalating tensions in the Middle East, particularly the conflict involving Iran, disrupted supply routes. The Brent North Sea crude, a key international benchmark, rose over eight percent, reaching $85.12 per barrel, marking its highest level since July 2024. Meanwhile, the U.S. oil benchmark, West Texas Intermediate (WTI), increased by more than seven percent to $76.47 per barrel. This spike in prices reflects growing concerns about potential disruptions to oil flows through the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, where approximately 20 percent of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas shipments transit.

Disruption in the Strait of Hormuz

The Strait of Hormuz has effectively been closed, according to a senior official from Iran’s Revolutionary Guards, who warned that any vessel attempting to navigate the strait would be targeted. This closure has led to a significant slowdown in shipping activity, with many tankers and container ships opting to avoid the area altogether. Insurers have reportedly withdrawn coverage for vessels operating in this high-risk zone, further complicating the situation. As a result, global oil and gas freight rates have surged, reflecting the heightened risks associated with transporting energy supplies through the region.

Escalating Military Actions

The military conflict has intensified, with the U.S. and Israeli air campaigns expanding. Israel has conducted strikes on targets in Lebanon, while Iran has retaliated by attacking energy infrastructure in Gulf countries and targeting tankers in the Strait of Hormuz. The situation escalated further when Saudi Arabia shut down its largest domestic oil refinery following a drone strike, exacerbating supply concerns. U.S. President Donald Trump stated that the military campaign, which commenced with a strike that killed Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, is progressing ahead of schedule but may continue for over four weeks. The stated objectives include dismantling Iran’s missile systems and nuclear program, although Trump did not call for regime change.

Warnings and Predictions

In light of the escalating conflict, the U.S. State Department has advised American citizens to leave the Middle East, particularly from Egypt eastward. An Iranian Revolutionary Guards general issued a stark warning, threatening to “burn any ship” in the Strait of Hormuz and indicating that oil pipelines would be targeted to obstruct exports from the region. He suggested that oil prices could soar to $200 per barrel in the near future. The rise in crude oil prices has reignited global inflation concerns, as increased energy costs could hinder central banks’ efforts to manage price pressures while considering potential rate cuts to stimulate economic growth.

Market Reactions and Future Outlook

The recent surge in oil prices has prompted analysts to revise their forecasts. Brokerage firm Bernstein raised its 2026 Brent price assumption from $65 to $80 per barrel, predicting that prices could spike to between $120 and $150 in the event of prolonged conflict. Technical analysts at Samco Securities noted that the recent price movements align with earlier projections, highlighting a breakout above $66 as a significant trigger for further gains. They cautioned that geopolitical shocks often lead to sharp price spikes, which may stabilize once initial panic subsides. As crude oil approaches a critical resistance level around $77.65, traders are advised to exercise caution and wait for potential pullbacks before making further investments.
