India Strengthens Maritime Defense with Rs 5,083 Crore Contracts
The Ministry of Defence made a significant stride in enhancing India’s maritime capabilities by signing contracts worth Rs 5,083 crore on March 3, 2026. This deal includes the procurement of six Advanced Light Helicopters (ALH) Mk-II for the Indian Coast Guard, along with Surface-to-Air Vertical Launch – Shtil missiles for the Indian Navy. Defence Secretary Shri Rajesh Kumar Singh officiated the contract signing ceremony at South Block, New Delhi.
Advanced Light Helicopters for Coast Guard
The Advanced Light Helicopters (ALH) Mk-III (Maritime Role) contract, valued at Rs 2,901 crore, includes not only the helicopters but also operational role equipment, an engineering support package, and performance-based logistics support. This significant procurement from Hindustan Aeronautics Limited in Bengaluru falls under the Buy (Indian-Indigenously Designed Developed and Manufactured) category.
These twin-engine helicopters boast advanced features that surpass those of the current airborne platforms. They are designed to execute a variety of maritime security missions, operating efficiently from both shore-based airfields and vessels at sea. This capability enhancement will be crucial for the Indian Coast Guard as it seeks to protect artificial islands, offshore installations, as well as safeguard fishermen and preserve the marine environment.
In addition to bolstering national security, the ALH project is set to benefit the Indian economy. It will rely on components sourced from over 200 Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), generating approximately 65 lakh man-hours of employment. This contract underscores the Government’s ongoing commitment to the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative and the Make-in-India campaign, aimed at ensuring greater self-reliance in defense manufacturing.
Enhancements in Naval Air Defense
Another significant aspect of the contracts is the acquisition of Surface-to-Air Vertical Launch – Shtil missiles and their associated holding frames, amounting to Rs 2,182 crore. This purchase from JSC Rosoboronexport in Russia is critical for bolstering the air defense systems aboard the Indian Navy’s frontline warships, equipping them to tackle a broad range of aerial threats.
The Shtil missile system will enhance the layered air defense architecture on naval platforms by enabling rapid, all-weather engagement capabilities. This advancement improves the survivability of naval assets in contested maritime settings, reinforcing India’s naval readiness.
This collaboration underscores the enduring and robust defense relationship between India and Russia, built on a foundation of mutual trust and strategic alignment. With these contracts, India not only fortifies its maritime security but also continues to solidify its partnerships in defense procurement.
