DRDO Successfully Tests New Air Defence Missile System
The Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO) has made significant strides in enhancing India’s air defence capabilities. It successfully conducted a series of three flight trials of the Very Short-Range Air Defence System (VSHORADS) from the Integrated Test Range (ITR) in Chandipur, located off the coast of Odisha. These trials aimed to affirm the missile system’s effectiveness in countering high-speed threats that can maneuver at various speeds, ranges, and altitudes.
Successful Flight Trials Demonstrate Capabilities
During these critical flight tests, the VSHORADS missiles intercepted and destroyed high-speed aerial targets that simulated enemy aircraft. The trials covered a range of threat scenarios, demonstrating the missile’s reliability against diverse engagement conditions. Conducted in the system’s final deployment configuration, the tests involved target acquisition and missile firing operations managed directly by field operators.
Validation Through Advanced Tracking Instruments
Data collected from various range instruments, including Telemetry systems, Electro-Optical Tracking System, and Radars at ITR, provided compelling evidence of the VSHORADS’s operational effectiveness against a vast array of aerial threats. Senior officials from DRDO, along with representatives from the Joint Forces and development partners, observed the flight trials, ensuring comprehensive validation of the system.
Localization and Adaptability for Armed Forces
The VSHORADS is a Man Portable Air Defence System that has been developed entirely in India by the Research Center Imarat in collaboration with other DRDO laboratories and industrial partners. This innovative missile system is engineered to meet the requirements of all three branches of the Indian Armed Forces: the Army, Navy, and Air Force.

In light of the successful trials, Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh extended his congratulations to the DRDO, the Armed Forces, and the collaborating industries. He emphasized the significance of these simultaneous flight trials, heralding a promising future for the system’s induction into the armed forces.
