INS Anjadip Joins Indian Navy as a Powerful New Asset
In a significant boost to its maritime capabilities, the Indian Navy officially commissioned INS Anjadip on February 27, 2026, at Chennai Port. This event marks the induction of the fourth vessel in the Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW-SWC) project, underscoring India’s commitment to strengthening its naval defense.
The commissioning ceremony was chaired by Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi, the Chief of the Naval Staff, and hosted by Vice Admiral Sanjay Bhalla, the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Eastern Naval Command. The gathering included senior naval officials, former commanding officers of the original Anjadip, and representatives from the shipbuilders, Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE) and Larsen & Toubro Shipbuilding.
Admiral Tripathi acknowledged the strategic importance of INS Anjadip in his address, highlighting the contributions of the shipbuilders and the dedicated crew who played pivotal roles in the ship’s timely commission.
Designed for Modern Naval Warfare
INS Anjadip, named after a historical island near Karwar, is specifically designed for effective anti-submarine warfare operations in shallow waters. The vessel measures 77 meters in length and displaces 1,400 tons, classified as a ‘Dolphin Hunter’ due to its capabilities. Notably, over 80% of the ship’s components are indigenous, demonstrating India’s growing self-reliance in defense technology and warship design.
The ship is outfitted with a state-of-the-art ASW suite and an advanced integrated Combat Management System, enabling it to detect, track, and neutralize sub-surface threats effectively. These features make INS Anjadip a formidable asset in India’s naval fleet, ready for rapid response and sustained operations in coastal waters.
A Milestone in Naval Strategy
The addition of INS Anjadip follows the commissioning of its predecessors, INS Arnala and INS Androth, aligning with the Indian Navy’s strategic roadmap for enhancing force levels and capabilities. It plays a crucial role in protecting India’s maritime trade routes and coastal infrastructure, ensuring the nation’s security in a complex maritime environment.
