Ahmedabad-Dholera Expressway Transforms Connectivity and Economy
The newly opened Ahmedabad–Dholera Greenfield Expressway (NE-8), extending 109.019 km, is redefining travel and economic prospects in Gujarat. Under the Bharatmala Pariyojana, this expressway serves as a vital connector, linking remote villages to bustling cities and turning aspirations into reality.
Connecting Ahmedabad and Bhavnagar districts, the expressway facilitates smooth access to the Dholera Special Investment Region (DSIR) and the coastal highway. With a total investment of ₹5,800 crore, it stands as one of the region’s most substantial infrastructure projects.
Although currently in the testing phase, the expressway is already enhancing travel experiences for commuters eager to enjoy quicker journeys. Regular user Narendra Singh Chudasma expressed how the expressway has significantly shortened his travel time, stating, “Earlier, the journey used to take 3.5 to 4 hours. Now I reach within 2.30 to 2.45 hours. Because of long hours on the road earlier, I couldn’t give enough time to my family. Now, the 2 to 2.5 hours I save are spent with them.” For Chudasma, the expressway has not just streamlined travel, but has also enriched family connections.
The expressway is poised to unlock the economic potential of Dholera. Local investor Yaduraj Singh Chudasma highlighted the expressway’s impact on investment, noting, “With the opening of this expressway, investors can travel easily and save time. Reaching Dholera from Ahmedabad now takes just 45 minutes, which is extremely important. Investors are happy and increasingly eager to invest in Dholera. This highway has removed the connectivity gap that once existed.” As travel becomes easier, interest in Dholera’s opportunities grows.
For residents like Harshdeep Singh Chudasma from Pipli village, the expressway has made a profound difference. “Two years ago, we felt that we lived very far from Ahmedabad as it was almost 120 to 130 kilometers away. But ever since this expressway was built, it feels like we live in Ahmedabad itself. Today, reaching Ahmedabad takes just 45 minutes, compared to two and a half hours earlier.” This newfound accessibility redefines daily life for many families.
Environmentally Friendly Construction
A notable feature of the Ahmedabad–Dholera Expressway is its commitment to environmental sustainability. The construction process highlights innovative practices, including:
- 60 lakh metric tonnes of waste from the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation reused in embankment construction
- 22 lakh metric tonnes of fly ash utilized, significantly reducing industrial waste
- Greening efforts featuring over 2,70,675 plants and 1,56,097 avenue plantations
A Glimpse of the Future
The expressway boasts several key features:
- A wide 30-metre median designed for future expansion to 8 lanes
- Direct access to Dholera International Airport via an interchange
- A planned Semi High-Speed Rail corridor running alongside
