TEC and IIT Kharagpur Partner for Next-Gen Telecom Standards

The Telecommunication Engineering Centre (TEC), the technical wing of the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) in India, has entered into a significant partnership with the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (IIT Kharagpur). This collaboration, formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed on February 23, 2026, aims to advance research and technical contributions in cutting-edge telecom technologies and global standardization efforts.

With this partnership, the two organizations seek to establish India-specific standards in emerging network technologies, including 6G, optical communication, and non-terrestrial networks (NTNs). They plan to work collaboratively on various telecom innovations such as Passive Optical Network technology, advanced antenna systems, and MIMO technologies geared towards 5G and future wireless networks. Moreover, the partnership will enhance India’s role in the International Telecommunication Union’s Standardization sector (ITU-T) and other global forums.

Key Areas of Collaboration

The collaboration is set to explore several key areas:

  • 6G Research: Investigating 6G architecture and technology, with a focus on research, pre-standardization, and contributions in international forums like the ITU.
  • AI-Enabled Telecom Systems: Conducting joint R&D in EMF monitoring solutions and developing smart IoT sensors with AI capabilities to ensure public safety and compliance with regulations.
  • Radio, Antenna & MIMO Technologies: Engaging in collective research to improve advanced antenna systems and massive MIMO technologies for enhanced connectivity.
  • Satellite & NTNs: Collaborating on studies related to satellite communication and non-terrestrial networks, focusing on disaster resilience and emergency connectivity solutions.

This partnership is poised to accelerate indigenous research and development in India, ultimately strengthening the country’s position in global telecommunications standards and practices. By fostering this initiative, the collaboration aligns with the Atmanirbhar Bharat vision, emphasizing self-reliance and homegrown solutions that can secure India’s critical communications infrastructure.
