India Advances Underwater Communication with New Acoustic Technology
In a significant move to enhance India’s expertise in advanced marine technologies, the Technology Development Board (TDB) under the Department of Science & Technology (DST) has officially partnered with Xalten Systems Pvt. Ltd. to launch a groundbreaking project. Titled “Development of High-Performance Acoustic Antenna System for Underwater High Data Rate Communication for Video Transmission,” this initiative aims to fill a crucial gap in underwater acoustic communication technology.
The TDB-supported endeavor intends to create sophisticated hydrophone array sensor systems that enable dependable, high-bandwidth communication, including real-time video transmission, between autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs). This ambitious project will be conducted in collaboration with Subnero Pte Ltd., based in Singapore, leveraging India’s proficiency in underwater acoustics alongside cutting-edge software-defined communication systems.
Addressing the Demand for Underwater Communication
With the increasing reliance on AUV swarms for various applications—ranging from offshore energy operations to deep-sea research and strategic defense initiatives—the necessity for robust high-data-rate underwater communication systems has become more pressing. Currently, most existing global solutions, designed by key industry players such as Kongsberg Maritime and Sonardyne, predominantly focus on long-range, low-bandwidth communication utilizing outdated architectures. The new indigenous system aims to address this inadequacy by developing wideband hydrophones that are specifically optimized for short-range, high-speed communication among various autonomous platforms.
Innovative Solutions for Challenging Conditions
The project envisions the design of an advanced acoustic antenna system that can achieve megabit-per-second data rates while sustaining reliability in challenging underwater conditions. By combining precision acoustic sensor arrays with adaptable communication frameworks, this solution seeks to facilitate real-time collaboration, navigation, and data sharing across marine robotic systems. Furthermore, the initiative plans to establish local manufacturing capabilities for advanced acoustic sensors, thereby minimizing dependence on imported technologies and bolstering India’s self-sufficiency in underwater sensing and communication.
Shri Rajesh Kumar Pathak, Secretary of TDB, emphasized the importance of such advanced underwater communication systems for India’s maritime research, offshore infrastructure, and strategic sectors. He remarked, “Through this Indo–Singapore joint proposal, TDB is endorsing the development and commercialization of high-performance indigenous acoustic technologies that position India as a pivotal player in the evolving blue economy, fostering international technology partnerships for mutual advancement.”
