Union Minister Reviews Rural Development Initiatives in Assam

Union Minister of State for Rural Development, Shri Kamlesh Paswan, conducted a comprehensive review of various rural development schemes in Majuli district, Assam, during his official visit. His interactions with local officials and community members highlighted the government’s ongoing commitment to enhancing rural infrastructure and empowering livelihoods through focused initiatives.
The minister began his visit with a review meeting with district officials at the Deputy Commissioner’s office, where they discussed the implementation and progress of several key programs, including physical and financial achievements, along with quality standards. This review aims at ensuring that rural projects are executed effectively and transparently.
Empowering Women through Self-Help Groups
After the meeting, Shri Paswan engaged with women from Self-Help Groups (SHGs) in the district. He shared impressive statistics about the Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana – National Rural Livelihoods Mission (DAY–NRLM), noting that approximately 39.76 lakh women in Assam are involved with 3.62 lakh SHGs. Since the program’s inception, loans totaling ₹23,252 crore have been granted, with non-performing assets remarkably low at just 0.56 percent. The minister praised these women’s contributions, highlighting their essential role in India’s broader vision of becoming a ‘Viksit Bharat’ (Developed India).
Inspecting Housing and Infrastructure Projects
Shri Kamlesh Paswan also inspected housing projects constructed under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana – Gramin (PMAY-G) in Garamur. He noted that Assam has sanctioned 29.09 lakh houses, of which 21.33 lakh have been completed. Specifically, in Majuli, out of 22,349 sanctioned houses, 20,107 had already been completed. The minister interacted with beneficiaries, emphasizing the need for continuing quality construction, timely completions, and the rapid conclusion of remaining housing projects.
Commitment to Connectivity and Healthcare
The minister’s itinerary also included a visit to the Rangachahi State Dispensary and an inspection of the Madhupur–Puranibari road, a project under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY). He announced that Assam has made significant progress, completing over 98 percent of its 9,269 sanctioned works. Emphasizing the importance of quality and maintenance, he stated that improving rural connectivity strengthens the local economy and provides essential opportunities for education, healthcare, and employment.
Appreciating Local Culture
Additionally, Shri Paswan inspected the Shri Shri Pitambar Dev Goswami District Hospital in Garamur, reviewing the health facilities available to the community. He concluded his visit by paying homage at Shri Shri Auniati Satra and Shri Shri Uttar Kamalabari Satra, acknowledging the rich Vaishnav tradition and cultural heritage present in Majuli.
