Srinagar Airport Expansion Set to Boost Regional Connectivity
In a significant boost to the region’s infrastructure, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has approved a ₹1,677 crore expansion project for the Civil Enclave at Srinagar International Airport. Minister for Civil Aviation, Shri Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu, hailed this initiative as a historic move aimed at enhancing aviation facilities and fostering inclusive development in Jammu & Kashmir.
The Government of India, under the leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, is dedicated to improving regional connectivity and tapping into the vast economic potential of the Union Territory. Srinagar International Airport currently serves around 44.7 lakh passengers each year, along with nearly 28,500 aircraft movements and approximately 10,000 metric tonnes of cargo. However, during the busy summer season, the airport often experiences significant congestion, highlighting the urgent need for expansion.
Major Capacity Increases on the Horizon
The new project is set to increase the airport’s annual passenger handling capacity from 2.5 million to an impressive 10 million. The peak hour passenger handling capability will see an increase from 950 to 2,900 passengers, greatly reducing wait times and improving overall travel experience. Furthermore, the expansion will allow the apron to accommodate 15 aircraft, including larger wide-body jets, thereby enhancing both domestic and international linkages and solidifying Srinagar’s position as a vital aviation hub in Northern India.
Boosting Tourism and Economic Growth
Tourism currently accounts for approximately 7% of Jammu & Kashmir’s Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP). With the anticipated improvements in air connectivity and infrastructure, this figure could rise to between 10% and 12% in the coming years. The region currently attracts about 1.7 crore visitors annually, with projections suggesting that this number could swell to between 2.7 crore and 3 crore by 2030 under moderate growth scenarios.
The airport expansion is poised to create a multitude of job opportunities, benefitting sectors such as airport operations, airlines, hospitality, tourism, and logistics. Enhanced connectivity will also facilitate the export of high-value local products, including apples, saffron, handicrafts, and dry fruits, boosting the region’s economy.
A Terminal That Reflects Culture and Sustainability
The planned new terminal will not only embrace Kashmir’s rich cultural heritage but also introduce state-of-the-art technologies and sustainable design elements. Features such as energy-efficient systems, optimal natural lighting, and innovative water conservation measures are expected to earn a high GRIHA sustainability rating.
Minister Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu remarked, “Srinagar Airport is evolving as a symbol of revival in the Kashmir Valley, particularly following the historic abrogation of Article 370. Our commitment is to establish a modern, state-of-the-art terminal at Srinagar within the next two years, which will significantly enhance regional connectivity and bolster local industries.” This expansion reaffirms the Indian government’s dedication to promoting economic growth and fulfilling the aspirations of the people in Jammu & Kashmir.
