New Metro Corridor to Enhance Ahmedabad Connectivity

The Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has given the green light for a significant metro extension from GIFT City to Shahpur, introducing a 3.33-kilometer corridor that will feature three elevated stations. This ambitious project is set for completion within four years and comes with an estimated budget of ₹1,067.35 crore.

Upon its anticipated completion in 2029, the corridor is projected to serve around 23,702 passengers daily, with a rise to approximately 58,059 commuters by 2041. The new link aims to significantly strengthen the transit network between Ahmedabad and the GIFT region, ultimately benefiting a myriad of multinational corporations, educational institutions, and commercial hubs located along its path.

Commuter Convenience and Economic Growth

This extension is designed to cater to the everyday travel needs of commuters between Ahmedabad and GIFT City, facilitating smoother transportation for business, employment, and educational purposes. As a result, it is expected to enhance overall network integration and passenger convenience, making daily commutes more efficient.

Job Creation and Economic Impact

The construction of the metro corridor is not just about improving transportation; it is also projected to create approximately 1,000 jobs during the building phase. Following the project’s completion, around 250 individuals will be engaged in operational and maintenance roles. In addition to these direct employment opportunities, the project is likely to stimulate further indirect job creation in the vicinity.

Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation Limited (GMRC), a joint venture equally owned by the Government of India and the Government of Gujarat, has been entrusted with the implementation of this project. Their ongoing efforts are part of the broader strategy to enhance metropolitan infrastructure in the region.

Current Metro Developments

The move comes on the heels of the successful operationalization of the first and second phases of the Ahmedabad Metro since September 2022 and January 2026, respectively. The current metro network spans 68.28 kilometers and serves a daily ridership of approximately 160,000, showcasing a sustained demand for efficient urban transport.
