Srinagar Airport Unveils Major Civil Enclave Development Plan

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, led by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, has given the green light for an ambitious Civil Enclave project at Srinagar International Airport. With an estimated budget of Rs.1,677 crore, this initiative aims to bolster the aviation infrastructure and enhance connectivity in the picturesque Kashmir Valley. The plan also includes the construction of accommodation for security personnel, marking a significant step toward improved safety and efficiency at the airport, which is managed by the Airports Authority of India within the Budgam Airbase of the Indian Air Force (IAF).
Originally designated as an international airport in 2005, Srinagar International Airport lies about 12 kilometers from the heart of Srinagar city. The new Civil Enclave will cover 73.18 acres and host a modern terminal building that spans 71,500 square meters – this includes 20,659 square meters of existing infrastructure. Designed to cater to 2,900 passengers during peak hours, the terminal aims for an impressive annual capacity of 10 million passengers. In addition to this, the expanded apron will feature 15 aircraft parking bays that accommodate various aircraft sizes, including a widebody option.
Architectural Brilliance and Sustainability
The new terminal will stand out architecturally, marrying contemporary design with the rich cultural heritage of Kashmir. It will showcase traditional elements, such as intricate woodwork and local craftsmanship, while maintaining modern operational standards. The design encourages efficient passenger flow, boasts spacious lounges, and incorporates advanced security and check-in technologies.
Sustainability is a key focus in the development of this project. Plans include innovative water harvesting systems, abundant natural lighting to lower energy costs, and the use of local eco-friendly materials to reduce its environmental impact. The initiative aims to achieve a prestigious 5-star GRIHA rating, underlining its commitment to sustainable practices.
Boosting Tourism and Employment
Beyond the infrastructure improvements, the Civil Enclave project is poised to significantly enhance tourism and economic expansion in the region. By providing better connectivity to famous attractions such as Dal Lake, Shankaracharya Temple, and the Mughal Gardens, the development is expected to generate numerous job opportunities and stimulate investments. Consequently, Srinagar is set to further solidify its reputation as a premier destination for both tourism and economic activities.
The Civil Enclave initiative represents a transformative advancement in delivering world-class aviation infrastructure. It promises improved facilities for travelers while showcasing the unrivaled cultural and natural beauty of Kashmir for the world to see.
