Government Approves 2.88 Lakh New Houses Under PMAY-U 2.0
In a significant stride towards providing affordable housing, the Government has sanctioned a total of 2.88 lakh houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana – Urban 2.0 (PMAY-U 2.0). This announcement was made during the sixth meeting of the Central Sanctioning and Monitoring Committee (CSMC) held on February 23, 2026, in New Delhi. The meeting was chaired by Shri Srinivas Katikithala, Secretary of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA), and involved key officials including Shri Kuldip Narayan, the Joint Secretary and Mission Director of Housing for All.
With this recent approval, the total number of houses sanctioned under the PMAY-U 2.0 scheme now exceeds 13.61 lakh, showcasing the government’s unwavering commitment to provide dignified and affordable housing for urban families, particularly those in the Economically Weaker Section (EWS), Low Income Group (LIG), and Middle-Income Group (MIG).
Houses Sanctioned Across Multiple States
The newly approved houses are spread across 16 States and Union Territories, including Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Jammu & Kashmir, Punjab, Puducherry, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Nagaland, Odisha, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal. These homes have been sanctioned under different categories of PMAY-U 2.0, including Beneficiary Led Construction (BLC), Affordable Housing in Partnership (AHP), and Affordable Rental Housing (ARH), with over 1.66 lakh, 1.09 lakh, and 12,846 houses approved respectively.
Focus on Rental Housing and Modern Projects
The MoHUA continues to emphasize the importance of rental housing through the ARH initiative, aimed at supporting urban migrants, the homeless, industrial workers, working women, and other vulnerable groups. In the latest meeting, 12,846 houses were designated under this category. Additionally, the CSMC approved three Demonstration Housing Projects (DHPs) located in Chhattisgarh, Puducherry, and Rajasthan, each consisting of 40 units that employ modern and cost-effective construction techniques for broader application throughout India.
Emphasizing Accessibility and Inclusivity
During the meeting, Secretary Katikithala stressed the need to prioritize housing close to mass transit corridors and highlighted that AHP houses should provide ease of living within city limits. He also called for successful affordable housing projects to be showcased as best practices to enhance learning among states and union territories.
Highlighting the importance of outreach, Joint Secretary and Mission Director Narayan emphasized that benefits must reach all eligible individuals, particularly focusing on women, senior citizens, persons with disabilities, and other marginalized groups. State governments were urged to accelerate project implementations, streamline approvals, and enhance monitoring for timely house delivery.
Supporting Vulnerable Groups
The PMAY-U 2.0 scheme is instrumental in uplifting the living standards of urban poor and middle-class families by ensuring access to secure housing, which in turn enhances social stability and economic security. Of the newly sanctioned houses, over 1.60 lakh are designated to women, including widows and unmarried individuals, alongside eight units specifically for the transgender community. The initiative also includes 22,581 houses for senior citizens and allocations for various marginalized categories including SC, ST, and OBC beneficiaries.
Since its launch in 2015, the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana – Urban has transformed millions of lives, providing over 97 lakh pucca houses and promoting inclusive urban development. The sanction of 2.88 lakh new homes marks a significant milestone in the relentless pursuit of ‘Housing for All’ in India.
