Significant Increase in Area Sown for Key Crops

The agricultural landscape for the year 2026 is showing promising growth, with notable increases in the area sown for several key crops. According to the latest data, the total area sown has surged to 83.92 lakh hectares, marking a 21.30 lakh hectare increase compared to the corresponding period last year.

Rise in Rice and Pulses Cultivation

Rice continues to dominate cultivation with an area sown of 33.28 lakh hectares, which is an increase from the expected normal summer area of 31.49 lakh hectares. Similarly, pulses have seen a substantial rise, occupying 27.07 lakh hectares compared to the standard of 23.40 lakh hectares. Among the pulses, greengram has witnessed a marked increase, growing to 23.49 lakh hectares, while blackgram also saw a rise to 3.58 lakh hectares.

Coarse Cereals and Oilseeds on the Upswing

Coarse cereals have shown a significant upward trend, with a total area of 14.06 lakh hectares recorded, surpassing the normal area of 12.08 lakh hectares. This surge includes contributions from maize, which has jumped to 8.50 lakh hectares from 6.98 lakh hectares last year. Furthermore, oilseeds have experienced a rise as well, with the area sown reaching 9.51 lakh hectares, an increase from the normal 8.40 lakh hectares. Groundnut stands out in this category, expanding to 4.20 lakh hectares, reflecting farmers’ confidence in its profitability.

This year’s sown area shows a remarkable increase of 20.38 lakh hectares when compared to the 21.30 lakh hectares recorded during the same period last year.
