Investors Shift Focus: Moving from ‘Buy America’ to Global Opportunities Beyond US Stocks

US investors are increasingly shifting their focus from domestic equities to international markets, marking a significant change in investment strategies. Recent data reveals that approximately $75 billion has been withdrawn from US equity products over the past six months, with a notable $52 billion of that occurring since the beginning of 2026. This trend indicates a growing diversification among American investors, even as the dollar’s decline makes foreign investments more costly. Analysts suggest this movement reflects a broader global trend where investors are reassessing their exposure to US assets.

Investors Look Beyond US Tech Dominance

Concerns surrounding the risks associated with artificial intelligence and the high valuations of major technology stocks are prompting US investors to explore opportunities in international markets. According to Bank of America’s February fund manager survey, there has been a significant shift from US equities to emerging markets, marking the fastest rotation in five years. Gerry Fowler, head of European equity strategy at UBS, noted that many investors are now considering offshore investments after observing the strong performance of foreign markets in dollar terms. So far in 2026, US investors have allocated around $26 billion to emerging-market equities, with South Korea and Brazil receiving substantial inflows of $2.8 billion and $1.2 billion, respectively. Despite the dollar’s approximately 10% decline against other currencies since January, which raises the cost of overseas investments, the robust performance of foreign markets can still enhance returns for US investors.

Valuation Gap Drives Global Rotation

The current investment landscape shows a notable shift away from high-growth technology stocks towards more stable industrial and defensive sectors, particularly in markets like Germany, the UK, Switzerland, and Japan. Laura Cooper, a global investment strategist at Nuveen, highlighted that US investors are increasingly evaluating the global market through a valuation lens. This reassessment is underscored by the cyclical growth momentum seen in Europe and Japan. For instance, European banking stocks surged by 67% last year and have continued to rise in 2026. In contrast, US equities remain at higher valuations, with the S&P 500 trading at approximately 21.8 times expected earnings, compared to 15 times in Europe and 13.5 times in China. Kevin Thozet, a portfolio adviser at Carmignac, noted that capital flows from the US into Europe have intensified since mid-2025, with nearly $7 billion directed towards European equity funds since the beginning of the year.

Implications of the Shift

The ongoing shift in investment strategies among US investors could have significant implications for both domestic and international markets. As American investors diversify their portfolios, they may contribute to a more balanced global investment landscape. The trend away from the traditional “buy America” strategy suggests that investors are becoming more aware of the potential benefits of international diversification. This could lead to increased capital inflows into emerging markets and other regions, potentially boosting their economic growth. Furthermore, as US investors reassess their strategies in light of changing market conditions, this may prompt a reevaluation of asset valuations across the globe. The implications of this shift will likely continue to unfold as investors navigate the complexities of the current economic environment.
