Hungarian Parliamentary Delegation Strengthens Ties with India

A parliamentary delegation from Hungary, led by Dr. Lajos Oláh, Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly, met with Shri Harivansh, the Hon’ble Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, in Parliament today. Their discussions aimed to bolster the centuries-old friendship between Hungary and India, emphasizing the significance of parliamentary engagement in enhancing bilateral relations.

The Deputy Chairman highlighted that such engagements serve as a crucial pillar in nurturing the diplomatic relationship between the two nations. He expressed a desire for increased parliamentary exchanges, reminiscing about his own visit to Hungary in March 2024, which illustrated the growing rapport.

Historical Ties and Shared Values

Reflecting on the historical ties, Shri Harivansh noted the establishment of diplomatic relations between India and Hungary in 1948, marking its 75th anniversary in 2023. He underscored the commitment both nations share towards democratic governance, constitutionalism, and rule of law, pointing out that their strong bilateral relationship is directed by the visionary leadership of their respective countries.

Emphasizing Technology for Public Good

The Hon’ble Deputy Chairman spoke about India’s advancements in digital transformation under Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He discussed the ongoing AI Impact Summit in New Delhi, themed “Democratising AI, Bridging the AI Divide,” which aims to ensure that Artificial Intelligence benefits all individuals. Shri Harivansh acknowledged Hungary’s involvement in this significant summit, appreciating its contributions.

India has rolled out various flagship Digital Public Infrastructure projects, such as Aadhaar for digital identity, UPI for digital payments, and DigiLocker for streamlining paperless governance. He expressed a keen interest in sharing expertise and experiences with Hungary, especially in leveraging AI in critical sectors like governance, education, and healthcare.

Collaboration in Education and Beyond

On the topic of bilateral cooperation, the Hon’ble Deputy Chairman thanked the Hungarian government for its assistance in evacuating Indian citizens during the crisis in Ukraine through Operation Ganga. He also underscored education as a key area for collaboration, praising Hungary’s involvement in specialized training programs for professionals in banking, auditing, and parliamentary procedures, part of the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) initiative since 1964.

Senior officials, including Secretary General of the Rajya Sabha Shri P. C. Mody, were present during this significant meeting, which reaffirmed the commitment towards strengthening ties between India and Hungary.
