India Advances AI Integration in Solar Energy at AI Impact Summit
Union Minister of New and Renewable Energy, Pralhad Joshi, recently visited the International Solar Alliance (ISA) Pavilion at the India AI Impact Summit held at Bharat Mandapam. During his visit, he explored a range of technology-driven innovations that aim to support the Global Mission on AI for Energy, highlighting the intersection of artificial intelligence and solar energy.
The Pavilion showcased practical, scalable models demonstrating how AI, digital platforms, and geospatial tools can enhance utility modernization, expedite the integration of renewable energy, and bolster energy resilience across ISA Member Countries. The India AI Impact Summit served as a key platform for promoting the Global Mission on AI for Energy, focusing on the synergy between solar energy deployment and digital intelligence.
Shifting Focus to Grid Transition
As distributed renewable energy sources continue to grow, the emphasis is increasingly on integrating these decentralized assets into stable and reliable power grids. This transition demands stronger transmission infrastructure, modern distribution networks, and real-time monitoring systems. Minister Joshi emphasized that energy transition must be paired with grid transition, advocating for intelligent, flexible grids powered by data-driven insights.
Several Indian states, including Delhi, Rajasthan, and Andhra Pradesh, are taking the lead in digitization efforts, implementing smart metering and digital control systems. These innovations help reduce energy losses and enable a greater share of renewables in their energy mix, providing valuable lessons for other developing nations looking to modernize their power infrastructures.
India’s Solar Growth Story
India’s journey in solar energy has been remarkable, with solar capacity growing from less than 3 GW in 2014 to over 141 GW today, making it one of the fastest-growing solar markets worldwide. The solar sector is central to India’s development strategy and energy security, exemplified by initiatives like PM-KUSUM, which allows farmers to become energy producers through solar pumps, reducing reliance on diesel while ensuring reliable power supply during the day.
Another notable program is the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, which aims to empower one crore households with rooftop solar installations, positioning it to become the world’s largest such program and transforming consumers into prosumers.
The Role of AI in Energy Resilience
The ISA, comprising 125 Member and Signatory Countries, offers a global platform for practical and replicable solutions to enhance the integration of solar energy with digital intelligence. The Global Mission on AI for Energy aims to leverage AI to improve load forecasting, predictive maintenance, grid optimization, and renewable integration, thus enhancing efficiency and resilience within the energy sector.
Among the innovative solutions showcased were:
- Digital Consumer Interface – One Solar App: Developed by BSES Rajdhani Power Limited, this app facilitates rooftop solar adoption through digital registration, transparent net-metering, performance tracking, and seamless service delivery.
- Digital Twin Solutions for DISCOMs: Startups are creating digital versions of electricity distribution networks, allowing for real-time simulations, renewable integration modeling, and predictive maintenance.
- GIS-Based Distribution Modernization: Initiatives like those from Andhra Pradesh’s Eastern Power Distribution Company are using geospatial mapping to improve asset visibility and infrastructure optimization.
The convergence of solar energy, storage, smart grids, and AI is poised to transform the future of the global energy landscape. India is committed to partnering with ISA Member Countries to foster a cleaner, smarter, and more inclusive energy future.
