AI Data Centres Drive Need for Innovative Energy SolutionsAt the India AI Impact Summit 2026, a pivotal session titled “From Insights to Action for Resilient, High-Performance Data Centres” took place, bringing to light the substantial energy demands posed by the rapid expansion of AI-driven data centres. Organized in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Energy (US DOE) and the National Lab of the Rockies, the session underscored the urgency for innovative strategies to manage the evolving challenges in energy systems and infrastructure planning.
As the reliance on compute power increases, data centres are shifting from being passive energy consumers to active players that influence grid reliability, financial resources, and investment strategies. This transformation raises significant questions about traditional grid planning and how to balance the growing energy demand with sustainability.
Expert Insights on Sustainable Growth
Leading experts from various fields participated in discussions on how to responsibly scale data centre capacities while ensuring climate resilience. Key topics addressed included the relationship between energy and water, advanced cooling technologies, optimal site selection, and the challenges posed by fragmented regulations in the absence of a unified national policy framework.
Jaqueline Cochran, Associate Laboratory Director at the National Lab of the Rockies, stated, “AI and data centres represent one of the defining energy challenges of our time. The rapid expansion of these facilities necessitates an integrated approach that encompasses everything from chip technology to infrastructure and power generation while focusing on cost-effectiveness, reliability, and speed of deployment.”
Policy Challenges Ahead
Arunabha Ghosh, CEO of the Council on Energy, Environment and Water, highlighted the impact of competitive federalism in India’s data centre growth. He noted that as binding national frameworks are still taking shape, it is critical to shift from scattered incentives to a cohesive strategy that aligns investment, resource efficiency, and infrastructure planning.
Murali Baggu, Lab Program Manager at the US Department of Energy, emphasized the interconnectedness of data centres with energy systems. He explained the importance of a ‘chip-to-grid’ approach to ensure that data centres can thrive harmoniously with the energy grid, promoting reliability and flexibility at scale.
Addressing Environmental Concerns
Abhijit Abhyankar, a Professor at IIT Delhi, pointed out the significant energy consumption and carbon footprint of AI data centres. He remarked, “To mitigate their power, cooling, water, and carbon impact, an integrated planning approach is essential, allowing for the design of energy systems, AI, and grid infrastructure to work in unison.”
The session concluded with a strong call for collaborative planning across sectors, combined with regulatory mechanisms that support innovation while ensuring reliability, affordability, and efficient resource management. This approach not only facilitates the growth of AI but also fortifies long-term infrastructure resilience.
