India Launches Groundbreaking AI Health Initiatives at Summit
During the India AI Impact Summit 2026, Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare, Shri Jagat Prakash Nadda, introduced two transformative digital health initiatives: SAHI (Secure AI for Health Initiative) and BODH (Benchmarking Open Data Platform for Health AI). These initiatives are pivotal in fostering the ethical and effective use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) within India’s healthcare sector.
Shri Nadda underscored the importance of building a robust digital infrastructure to support AI applications in healthcare. He noted that India has been proactively laying the groundwork for this digital transformation since 2015, with the launch of the Digital India programme aimed at establishing a digitally empowered society.
Strengthening Digital Health Ecosystem
The minister highlighted how the healthcare sector has aligned with this national vision. The National Health Policy of 2017 aimed to create an extensive digital health ecosystem focused on interoperability, inclusion, and scalability. To build on this strategy, the Government launched the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM) in 2020, laying a strong digital foundation for healthcare services.
Shri Nadda pointed out the substantial advancements made thus far, with the establishment of interoperable systems across various platforms and the development of consent-based health data frameworks that prioritize the empowerment of citizens while ensuring privacy and data security.
Introducing SAHI and BODH
The Secure AI for Health Initiative (SAHI) was characterized as a governance and policy framework aimed at guiding the responsible deployment of AI technologies in healthcare. According to Shri Nadda, SAHI will foster an ethical, transparent, accountable, and citizen-centric approach to utilizing AI.
Moreover, the minister discussed SAHI’s role in facilitating collaboration within the healthcare ecosystem. He emphasized that innovation should flourish without compromising public interest.
He also expounded on the potential of AI in pharmaceuticals and life sciences, where AI tools can streamline drug discovery, improve clinical trials, and reduce research costs, ultimately enhancing affordable healthcare delivery.
Collaboration with Academia
Highlighting collaboration between government and academia, Shri Nadda introduced BODH, a platform designed to offer a framework for evaluating and validating AI solutions before they are deployed at scale. BODH aims to ensure that AI tools employed by clinicians meet stringent standards for performance and reliability, fostering trust and accountability in AI applications within healthcare.
Union Health Secretary, Punya Salila Srivastava, echoed the minister’s sentiments, stating that the launch of SAHI and BODH signifies a key milestone in advancing AI technologies in healthcare. She emphasized that these frameworks will be essential for guiding the integration and application of AI in the healthcare realm.
Global Recognition and Future Vision
Dr. Catharina Boehme, from the World Health Organization, lauded India’s leadership in implementing a national AI strategy for health, positioning the nation among the front-runners in digital health innovation. She highlighted that this strategy is designed not only to enhance healthcare delivery but also to reach underserved populations.
Both SAHI and BODH aim to create a trustworthy and inclusive health AI ecosystem that prioritizes innovation, responsibility, and public trust. The initiatives are poised to advance India’s commitment to integrating digital innovations with public health objectives, ensuring that AI solutions enhance patient care while safeguarding data privacy.
The summit attracted participation from various stakeholders, including healthcare professionals, AI innovators, and representatives from leading academic institutions, all uniting to promote the responsible use of AI in healthcare.
