Major Highway Upgrade Approved to Boost Connectivity in Gujarat
The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, led by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, has recently greenlit an ambitious project to construct two 4-lane highway sections in Gujarat, spanning a total of 107.67 kilometers. This significant infrastructure initiative, with a capital cost of Rs. 4,583.64 crore, will enhance important routes on National Highway-56, which connects Rajasthan and Gujarat and furthers economic development in the region.
Improving Connectivity and Economic Growth
The approved highway segments include the Dhamasiya–Bitada/Movi stretch of 47.46 kilometers and the Nasarpore–Malotha section measuring 60.21 kilometers. These routes will traverse several districts, improving access to various tribal and rural areas, particularly in Dahod, Chhota Udepur, Tapi, and Bharuch. This infrastructure development is poised to boost regional connectivity, facilitate travel, and promote economic growth.
Connecting Tourists to Key Destinations
A highlight of the project is its proximity to the Statue of Unity, a celebrated national tourist attraction located about 11 kilometers from NH-56 in Kevadia village. The enhanced road infrastructure will not only benefit local communities but also increase tourist traffic to this iconic site.
Time Savings and Job Opportunities
Designed for speeds of up to 100 km/h, the new sections will significantly reduce travel time by 40%, dropping the journey duration from 2.5 hours to just 1.5 hours. Furthermore, the project aims to create substantial employment opportunities, generating approximately 19.38 lakh man-days of direct employment and 22.82 lakh man-days of indirect employment. This increase in job prospects is anticipated to further stimulate local economies along the proposed corridor.
Upgrade of Congested Areas
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways is also addressing congestion on the NH-56 by upgrading existing road sections through the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). Plans to expand the Jambugam (Bodeli)-Malotha section of NH-56 into a four-lane configuration are already underway, with construction expected to conclude within two years. This development will facilitate smoother traffic flow and enhance overall connectivity to key highways, including NH-53, NH-48, and the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway.
