Colombo Airfares Surge to Rs 1 Lakh in Anticipation of India-Pakistan T20 World Cup Match

Airfares to Colombo have surged dramatically as Indian cricket fans rush to finalize their travel plans for the highly anticipated T20 World Cup match between India and Pakistan on Sunday. The recent decision by Pakistan to participate in the match has sparked a significant increase in demand for flights and accommodations in Sri Lanka’s capital. Travel experts report a notable rise in bookings, particularly in the days leading up to the match, highlighting the last-minute rush among fans eager to witness this marquee event.

Airfares Spike Sharply

According to Thomas Cook India, last-minute round-trip fares to Colombo have seen a steep increase, reaching approximately Rs 50,000 from Chennai and Kochi, Rs 70,000 from Mumbai, and between Rs 90,000 and Rs 1 lakh from Delhi. This surge in airfares reflects the heightened demand as fans scramble to secure their travel arrangements. Rajeev Kale, president of Thomas Cook India, noted that hotel prices, especially at centrally located and upscale properties, have also risen significantly. Major cities like Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad are driving the outbound demand, with Colombo emerging as the primary destination. Additionally, there is a noticeable spillover of bookings into nearby locations such as Galle and Kandy, as fans explore more of Sri Lanka.

Extended Stays and Itineraries

Travel agencies are observing a trend of longer itineraries among fans attending the match. Approximately 12% of travelers are opting for quick two- to three-night trips focused on the game, while over 20% are extending their visits into longer holidays that include beach stays, nightlife, and curated experiences. SOTC Travel president SD Nandakumar highlighted that many fans are incorporating nearby beach destinations and leisure activities into their travel plans. This trend indicates that the India-Pakistan match is not just a sporting event but also a catalyst for tourism, prompting fans to explore more of what Sri Lanka has to offer.

Impact on Travel Economics

Ravi Gosain, president of the Indian Association of Travel Operators, emphasized that the India-Pakistan match significantly alters travel economics, even within a short timeframe. He noted that this event presents a high-margin opportunity for travel operators, as the combination of a limited booking window, restricted flight inventory, and high emotional demand allows for increased pricing power. The unique nature of this rivalry in cricket creates a surge in travel interest, making it a lucrative period for the travel industry.

Increased Demand for Accommodations

The demand for hotel accommodations in Colombo has also seen a remarkable increase, rising over 35% as fans flock to the city for the match. Manjari Singhal, chief growth and business officer at Cleartrip, reported that bookings during the tournament window have surged by more than 20% compared to the January baseline and non-event periods. The ease of travel, facilitated by Sri Lanka’s visa-free access for Indian citizens and the city’s short-haul connectivity, has further encouraged spontaneous travel plans. As the match approaches, the excitement among fans continues to drive both flight and hotel bookings to unprecedented levels.
