India Launches Creative Labs to Boost AVGC Sector in Schools

The Ministry of Information & Broadcasting (I&B) has initiated a major step towards enhancing India’s creative economy. A workshop held today at the National Media Centre in New Delhi aims to roll out Content Creation Labs across 15,000 schools and 500 colleges nationwide. This ambitious initiative is a pivotal component of India’s ‘Orange Economy’ vision, positioning the country as a global leader in the Animation, Visual Effects, Gaming, and Comics (AVGC) sectors.
During the event, Shri Sanjay Jaju, Secretary of the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, emphasized the role of the Indian Institute of Creative Technologies (IICT). Approved by the Union Cabinet last year and now operational at the NFDC campus, the IICT will act as the primary institution managing the establishment of these labs. Jaju noted that these labs will serve as a crucial talent pipeline for the IICT, illustrating the government’s commitment to fostering a skilled workforce in these emerging fields.
The workshop convened a diverse group of stakeholders, including officials from the NITI Aayog, the Ministry of Education, and the Ministry of Skill Development & Entrepreneurship. Attendees also included members of various educational and industry councils, state representatives, and academia.
Key Highlights of the Workshop
Participants discussed several essential features of the proposed labs:
- These labs will be state-of-the-art creative studios, offering students practical experience with industry-standard software and hardware in professional production pipelines.
- Aligning lab activities with the National Education Policy (NEP) will ensure students gain essential skills and specialized training in creative fields.
- The need for mentorship programs and the cultivation of original intellectual property (IP) was a central theme, aimed at boosting global employability and promoting creative entrepreneurship among students.
- An emphasis was placed on coordination between national missions and state education departments to effectively scale the initiative throughout the country.
The workshop concluded with a decisive commitment to connect academic teachings with industry needs, empowering the youth to take the lead in the global creative economy. These labs are set to nurture creativity and problem-solving skills from a young age, preparing students for future job opportunities in a technology-driven creative landscape.
